World Wrestling Olympic Qualifiers 2024: Updated schedule, fixtures, results, live streaming details
Four Indian wrestlers have secured Paris Olympics quotas.
The final wrestling Olympic qualification tournament is upon us, marking the last chance for Indian grapplers to secure their spots for the Paris Olympics 2024. The World Wrestling Olympic Qualifiers 2024 are set to take place in Istanbul, Turkey, from May 9 -12.
Three quota places are available in each category. The finalists (top two) and the winner among the two bronze medalists will earn the quota places for their countries. To-date, Indian wrestlers have secured four quotas, all achieved by female athletes. Antim Panghal (53kg) clinched her spot at the World Championships, while two-time Olympian Vinesh Phogat (50kg), Anshu Malik (57kg) and Reetika Hooda (76kg) earned their quotas at the Asian Olympic Qualifiers.
India will send a 14-member squad, aiming to secure a significant number of quotas. The spotlight will be on 2023 Asian champion Aman Sehrawat (men’s 57kg), Tokyo Olympian Deepak Punia (men’s 86kg) and Nisha Dahiya (women’s 66kg).
Deepak Punia, who faced unfortunate disqualification at the Asian Olympic Qualifier due to late arrival for weigh-ins caused by floods in Dubai, will be eager to qualify for the Olympics. The male wrestlers will aim to step up after a subpar qualification period. Meanwhile, the female wrestlers will strive for a perfect 6/6 quotas.
