WWE Night of Champions 2023: Top 10 things that must happen
The event will take place at the Jeddah Superdome in Saudi Arabia
The Night of Champions 2023 is one of the most hyped premium live events of WWE, filled with multiple marquee matches. The match card features a lot of top wrestlers in the business and multiple championship defenses. WWE is also set to crown its new World Heavyweight Champion at Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Making it one of the most expected premium live events after WrestleMania. As fans are filled with expectations, here are top 10 things that must happen at Night of Champions 2023.
10. Rhea Ripley Dominates Natalya
Rhea Ripley is the current SmackDown Women’s Champion who successfully won the Championship against the 14 time champion Charlotte Flair at WrestleMania. She defended it against Zelena Vega at Backlash in Puerto Rico by destroying Zelena at her home town. Rhea continued her domination on Raw during and after the match against Dana Brooke. Where Natalya appeared after months by interrupting Rhea Ripley and had a quick stare down.
However, this turned into a match at Night of Champions for the SmackDown Women’s Championship. Although the creative writers were hyped to book Nattie for the match, it didn't make any sort of expectations for the match as it is clear that Rhea could possibly sweep Natalya at Saudi Arabia. However, Natalya should be prepared to give a tough fight to not end the match in a squash.
9. Asuka wins Raw Women’s Championship
This is one of the most expected and exciting matches on the match card, where the possibility of the championship changing hands is high. The new mist loving heel version of Asuka could possibly end Bianca Belair’s long championship reign at Night of Champions. A properly delivered mist could change the women’s division upside down on the SmackDown roster making Asuka the New Raw Women’s Champion.
The Bianca Belair reign has been so long and there are not enough competitors for her to defend the title. It could be the right chance to lose the championship and turn heel along with Street Profits making a new heel stable in Smackdown. Asuka holding the championship as a heel could create opportunities for multiple fresh faces.
8. Gunther squashes Mustafa Ali
Gunther vs Mustafa Ali for the Intercontinental Championship is made as a match just to book a match for the Intercontinental Championship to be defended. This match result is totally expected as Gunther could possibly destroy Mustafa Ali and retain his championship. There is no way in the near future that Gunther is losing his championship until he relinquishes his title. The match could feature Gunther’s domination and power, which could help his character become even stronger. The match could hardly last up to 10 minutes unless Mustafa Ali delivers a hard fight.
7. Becky & Trish rival continues
Becky Lynch vs Trish Stratus match could end up in a messy finish or a no contest to drag the feud until SummerSlam. The match was originally planned for the SummerSlam, however without a long story telling and developing the feud it was booked on Night of Champions. It was rumored that this could be the farewell match of Trish, hence WWE could develop this feud by making a huge brawl at Saudi Arabia. Thereby continuing the feud and making a no disqualification match at SummerSlam.
6. Roman Reigns urge gets paused
WWE could possibly hold Roman Reigns’ urge to capture all the golds in the company. Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn have just started to emerge as the leaders of the Tag Team Division after capturing the Undisputed Tag Team Championship at WrestleMania. However, making them lose the title to Roman Reigns and Solo Sikoa makes no sense as it will result in a rare title defense.
WWE must make Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn retain their championship at Night of Champions. As Roman getting pinned by KO or Zayn is practically not possible, Solo being pinned or being disqualified to retain championships is the only possibility. WWE is in a necessity to book The Bloodline to defeat Saudi Arabia by holding Roman Reigns’ wish to capture every gold for a while.
5. Cody Rhodes fights through pain
Cody Rhodes and Brock Lesnar had a match in Puerto Rico at Backlash, where Lesnar burst open and consumed defeat as Cody converted “Kimura” submission hold into a pinfall. Brock then had his revenge by brutally attacking Cody and by breaking his left arm. Cody Rhodes was then advised by the medical team and Triple H to have treatment for the arm and not to fight Brock Lesnar in Saudi Arabia.
Cody denied the request and is willing to fight Lesnar. However at Night of Champions, Cody will walk into the Night of Champions and fight Brock Lesnar with the broken arm. Similar to what he has done in 2021, where he fought Seth Rolling with a torn pec at Hell in a Cell. Cody could receive a huge respect among fans and raise his status to be a more heroic babyface.
4. Brock being Cody’s Nightmare
Cody fighting Brock Lesnar with one arm is like a mere suicide attempt, which could result in a hard punishment. Brock Lesnar had already lost against Cody Rhodes, however Lesnar losing twice in a row is impossible. Thus creative should be clear that Brock getting defeated with one armed Cody could only make him weaker. It would be justified if Cody loses the match by referee stopping the match or getting pinned after a hard fight. However this could make Cody stay away from television for a small period of time and could affect his current flow.
3. Seth winning World Heavyweight Championship
As soon as the New World Heavyweight Championship was introduced by WWE, Seth Rollins has been the fans favourite to win the title. Seth Rollins was on a losing path the previous year and this championship win could regain his position. It has been so long since Seth won the primary title and this might be the perfect opportunity for him.
Although seeing AJ Styles fight for the top level championships after years seems genuine, holding the title on the SmackDown brand as a secondary champ does not make sense. It is also possible for AJ to move to Raw, but this could also affect his O.C stable. Thus Seth Rollins winning the Championship could be the only possibility to keep the Raw roster awake.
2. World Championship Main Event
Although the Night of Champions premium live event has multiple potential main event matches, the World heavyweight Championship should be the main event of the evening. This could create the hype on the importance of the New Championship. Seth Rollins winning the championship and celebrating the victory similar to his cash-in victory over Brock Lesnar and Roman Reigns at WrestleMania will be great when compared to other equivalent matches.
1. Roman Reigns stares down Seth Rollins
As Roman Reigns already has the idea to capture all the golds in the company a quick stare down could be great. However WWE will book a Champion vs Champion match in the near future as a part of the Survivor Series match. Roman addressing Seth Rollins' victory and having a staredown with eyes on Seth’s Championship could create a huge hype for the possible match later this year.
