Earlier this year, WWE sold 51% of its stake to Endeavor, which is the parent company of the UFC. The deal was made for innovation, value creation, and significant additional value for shareholders by bringing UFC and WWE together. When the deal was closed, the rumors around it speculated that there could be more UFC-WWE collaborations in future.

One such connection is said to occur on August 5, 2023 at SummerSlam, where two former Mixed Martial Artists from UFC is said to go one-on-one in a “MMA Rules” stipulation match. Although WWE hired a number of superstars from MMA background, this is the first time the “MMA Rules” match is being booked.

What are MMA Rules?

Mixed Martial Arts is one of the most dynamic combat sports where martial artists from various disciplines fight under the same MMA rule, which allows punching, kicking and using grappling techniques to strike and tackle opponents. There are also some of the no do’s in the match, where strikes to the groin, eye gouging, biting, grabbing, manipulating fingers, head butts, striking the back of the head, attacking orifices are not allowed.

The match usually occurs inside a cage (octagon) and consists of either three or five; each round is of 5 minutes, with constant breaks between rounds. Unlike pro-wrestling matches pinfall is not the traditional way to defeat your opponents, instead one could win in multiple ways including Knockout, Split Decisions, Technical Knockout (TKO), Forfeit and No Contest.

It is speculated that the “MMA Rules” match between Ronda Rousey and Shayna Baszler could vary from the traditional MMA rules, as WWE claims itself the sports entertainment company.

How did they get into the “MMA Rules”?

As we know that both Ronda Rousey and Shayna Baszler are from the MMA background and they have known each other for a long time. They were on the same page until Money in the Bank, where Shayna turned on Rousey to lose the WWE Women’s Tag Team Champion. Shayna explained that she is the one who brought Rousey to WWE, and she is the one to shut her up.

They brawled for weeks, where Rousey challenged for a match at SummerSlam. Between brawls, Shayna claimed that she is a better mixed martial artist than her and she would defeat her to take her recognitions away from her. In the final episode before SummerSlam, WWE televised a video package of them and finally revealed the “MMA Rules” Stipulations, since the background of their feud is around MMA.
