Dominik Mysterio's Rise to Prominence: Reliving His Monumental 2023 in WWE
Dominik Mysterio has been having a great year in WWE so far. Throughout the year he had been involved in a lot of top card feuds, had a match at WrestleMania, won his first singles championship, developed into a great heel and is now an undeniable wrestler at a younger age. Here we rewind the historic journey of Dominik Mysterio in 2023.
Con-Dom from Prison
Dominik Mysterio started the year with a prison gimmick, where he was escorted to prison following Dom and Rhea’s invasion of Rey Mysterio’s house for a thanksgiving party. Dom got released from jail and tweaked a gimmick pretending himself a dangerous man, who spent time with the world’s dangerous people.
Feud with Dad & making history at WrestleMania
Dominik attacked Rey Mysterio before entering the Royal Rumble match backstage and he instead entered with his father’s mask. Dominik with The Judgement Day, especially with Rhea Ripley kept tormenting Rey Mysterio again and again forcing him to accept a match with his son. Rey Mysterio kept avoiding fights with Dom and tried to be calm, however Dom kept teasing him, stating Rey as “Deadbeat Dad”. As Dom started disrespecting his mother and sister, Rey finally kept his hands on Dom and accepted his challenge to face Dom at WrestleMania.
Dominik disrespected Rey’s Hall of Fame induction by walking out to back screen a day before their match. Rey and Dom finally had a match at WrestleMania 39 Night-1, where Rey won. The match marked the first ever Father vs Son match at WrestleMania.
Winning the first single’s championship
After settling his feud with his father Rey, Dominik appeared on NXT to challenge the NXT North American Champion Wes Lee for the championship. Where Dominik claimed his first singles championship with the assistance of Rhea Ripley and Judgment Day members.
Main Event Dom
After clinching the NXT North American Championship, Dominik appeared on all the three shows and eventually main eventing them in the same week. Dominik Mysterio became the first ever wrestler to be main eventing all three shows- Raw, SmackDown and NXT on the same week.
Made Judgment Day add more gold
Dominik Mysterio played a major role in re-uniting Damien Priest and Finn Balor and saving Judgment Day from a potential split. Rhea Ripley ordered Balor and Priest to add gold to the team by winning the Undisputed WWE Tag Team Championship. As they went for the championship street fight against Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens, Dominik assisted Priest and Balor by attacking Sami Xayn with the briefcase and made Priest and Balor the Undisputed Tag Team Champions, which also made Balor the Grand Slam Champion.
Two Time NXT North American Champion
Dominik Mysterio lost his NXT North American Championship against Trick Williams at NXT No Mercy after 74 days. However with Rhea Ripley’s influence got the rematch and recaptured the gold three days later, by becoming the NXT North American Champion for the second time. Dominik became the third wrestler to capture the NXT North American Championship twice after Johnny Gargano and Carmelo Hayes.
Entered WarGames with The Judgment Day
Dominik was involved in the feud with the babyfaces and entered the WarGames match for the first time with their team Judgment Day & Drew McIntyre against Cody Rhodes, Seth Rollins, Sami Zayn, Randy Orton, and Jey Uso. Although they lost the match, Dom showcased some extraordinary in-ring skills. Dom became the youngest wrestler to step foot inside the Men’s WarGames match on the main roster.
Second Most matches in the year
Dominik Mysterio had the second most number of matches for WWE in 2023, by wrestling for 100 matches. The only one ahead of him is Cody Rhodes, who wrestled two matches ahead of him. He is yet to have a couple of matches with CM Punk this year at WWE Live Event Holiday tour.
