WWE is one of the biggest professional wrestling promotions in the world, which is known for some of the biggest events and innovative matches. It is a house of special stipulation matches, where a number of unique matches occur to determine the winners and potential contenders.
WWE has recently announced a Gauntlet match to find out the potential challenger for the Intercontinental Championship. Here we take a look at what is a Gauntlet match and how does it work?
Gauntlet Match
Gauntlet match is a special stipulation professional wrestling match, which takes place in a series, involving a number of wrestlers. Two wrestlers will start the match in a traditional way, where the loser will be replaced by another wrestler immediately. This process will continue until the last one is pinned or submitted to win the match.
Although being a special stipulation match, the match takes place only on the traditional rules, where one can only win by pinfall or submission and disqualifications apply. This match is quite similar to the Iron Man match, but there is no time limit and the losing wrestlers will be replaced by another wrestler.
Usually, the Gauntlet match will take place in WWE, when multiple stars fight for the one vacant position or when the company tries to test someone’s abilities. As per the dynamic of the match stipulation, wrestlers entering the match late have a high chance of winning the match.
However, some WWE stars have survived the obstacles from the very beginning till the end. There are a number of different varieties of Gauntlet matches in the professional wrestling industry and here is how they vary.
Gauntlet Eliminator
It took place in WWE’s secondary promotion NXT in 2021, where every four minutes a wrestler will enter the match and the eliminations occur in the traditional way.
Gauntlet for the Gold
It takes place in TNA, and it is like the Royal Rumble match, where the people will be eliminated when thrown over the top rope and the last two wrestlers will be having a traditional match with pinfall or submission rules.
