We might see the return of a former WWE World Champion
Following WWE’s alleged acquisition of Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide, numerous prominent AAA talents have reportedly signed with the US-based organization, including former World Champion Alberto Del Rio.
The announcement comes from Super Luchas Editor-in-Chief Ernesto Ocamo, who claims on X that WWE has signed a number of top AAA stars as the business continues to construct the roster under the new collaboration. Notable signings include Alberto El Patron, Hijo de Dr. Wagner, Hijo del Vikingo, La Parka, La Hiedra, Lady Flammer, Lady Maravilla, and Niño Hamburguesa.
Alberto El Patron (Alberto Del Rio) re-joins WWE
The current AAA Mega Champion gained popularity as Alberto Del Rio during his tenure with WWE, where he won four World Championships. He left the business in 2016 and has since been embroiled in turmoil, including legal and personal concerns that many felt would preclude his return.
While El Patron is anticipated to continue wrestling in AAA events, it is unclear whether he would return to WWE’s main roster. His re-signing is remarkable, considering the long-standing suspicion regarding his employment position with the organization.
WWE’s acquisition of AAA is anticipated to be completed later this year, in what is being described as a major worldwide expansion move. WWE is already making an impact in the promotion, with Rey Mysterio opening the first AAA show under the company’s direction.
Rey Mysterio, an injured WWE star, featured in a video for an AAA event on Saturday. In the roughly one-minute video, Mysterio hyped the forthcoming combined WWE-AAA “Worlds Collide” event, concluding by proclaiming, “the future flies here.”
Rey Mysterio said, “For nearly a century, Lucha Libre has redefined wrestling. And now the whole world is watching AAA and WWE, taking Lucha Libre higher, faster, better, farther. The future flies here.”
