WWE Backlash 2025 will feature the final match between John Cena & Randy Orton
WWE has officially announced only one match for Backlash: St. Louis so far an Undisputed WWE Championship bout pitting John Cena (c) against Randy Orton. This was confirmed on the April 25, 2025 episode of SmackDown, when Orton confronted Cena and challenged him to meet for the title in Orton’s hometown.John Cena was hesitant to accept the challenge (tossing the WWE Title to Orton) but was RKO’d by Orton. The WWE press release for Backlash had already teased that the event would “feature” both Orton and Cena, as part of Cena’s year-long farewell tour.
This singles title match is the only bout officially advertised so far. No special stipulations have been announced, and WWE’s site notes that “the card is subject to change” as storylines develop.
Other major storylines on WWE television are clearly being set up to culminate at WWE Backlash, even if the matches haven’t been formally announced. On Raw (April 21), newly crowned Women’s Tag Team Champions Liv Morgan & Raquel Rodriguez defeated defending champions Becky Lynch & Lyra Valkyria, after which Becky viciously turned on Valkyria and attacked her.
On the April 29 episode of WWE Raw, Becky Lynch confirmed her heel turn by admitting she attacked Bayley before WrestleMania 41. After calling Women’s Intercontinental Champion Lyra Valkyria a “loser” and taking credit for her success, Valkyria confronted her and challenged her to a title match at Backlash. Lynch initially walked away, but after a brief brawl that ended with Lynch standing tall, the match was made official.
During the April 29, 2025, edition of WWE Raw, Pat McAfee officially challenged Gunther to a match at Backlash. McAfee, who hasn’t competed in a singles match since WrestleMania 39, made his return to in-ring action after an intense confrontation with the former World Heavyweight Champion.
Following last week’s incident where Gunther attacked legendary broadcaster Michael Cole, McAfee said he had no choice but to step in. Although he briefly fought back, McAfee was ultimately choked out by Gunther. Refusing to let the attack go unanswered, McAfee cut a fiery, emotional promo on Raw, talking about loyalty, friendship, and standing up for those who stand by you, especially Cole.
Demanding justice, McAfee called interim Raw GM Nick Aldis to the ring and pleaded for Gunther’s suspension to be lifted so they could settle things immediately. While Aldis declined to lift the suspension early, he did grant McAfee a sanctioned match against Gunther at Backlash, set for May 10 in St. Louis.
During the May 02 episode of Friday Night SmackDown, General Manager Nick Aldis initially announced that United States Champion Jacob Fatu will defend the title in a triple-threat match against Damian Priest and LA Knight.
However, after Solo Sikoa tried to remind him that Drew McIntyre won the #1 contenders match and should be the one to challenge Fatu, Aldis made the match a fatal four-way as Fatu will put the title on the line against McIntyre, Knight, and Priest next week.
On the May 05 episode of Monday Night Raw, Penta got back into the win column with an impressive win over JD McDonagh, while fending off interferences from Finn Balor and Carlito as well as from Chad Gable.
Following the win, the promotion shortly announced an Intercontinental Championship match where Dominik Mysterio will battle Penta in a rematch from their recent meeting on Raw after WrestleMania show where Mysterio emerged victorious after an outside interference from JD McDonagh.
