WWE is bringing back the Saturday Night’s Main Event

The Stamford-based promotion is bringing back Saturday Night’s Main Event after its last revived run in 2008. The classic show will return later this year, with a special broadcast on both NBC and Peacock on December 14 at 8 p.m. ET.

The WWE Saturday Night Main Event will be held at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Uniondale, New York. As part of a deal to relocate Friday Night SmackDown from Fox to USA, the promotion revived its classic series Saturday Night’s Main Event on NBC.

These specials will continue to air quarterly as part of WWE’s newest media rights agreement with NBCUniversal, which was inked last year and took effect earlier this month.

The show initially debuted in 1985 as a series of special events that ran on the network until 1992. These programs occasionally included important moments to leverage the increased publicity from broadcast television, and they frequently featured Hulk Hogan wrestling in the main event.

More recently, the business reintroduced the brand name in 2022, with a series of WWE Saturday Night Main Event shows planned for that spring.

However, unlike prior editions, these events were not televised. The last television resurrection ran from 2006 to 2008, with a series of five-hour-long specials that aired on NBC.

  • Gunther vs Finn Balor vs Damien Priest – World Heavyweight Title Match
  • Liv Morgan vs Iyo Sky – Women’s World Title Match

Cody Rhodes vs Kevin Owens – Undisputed WWE Championship

‘The American Nightmare’ Cody Rhodes is set to defend his Undisputed WWE title against Kevin Owens at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum on December 14.

The match was officially announced by the Stamford-based promotion via their official X (Twitter) handle. The Prizefighter is getting a second chance against Rhodes for the title.

As per reports in October, it was rumored after the viral attack on Rhodes at Bad Blood, that Owens would challenge Rhodes for the title on the first SNME since 2008. The promotion has now made the match official for SNME 2024.

Owens and Rhodes are involved in a gruesome feud since the champion teamed up with Roman Reigns to take on Solo Siko and Jacob Fatu at Bad Blood 2024 PLE.

Randy Orton was also embroiled in this feud when he tried to diffuse the situation between the two stars last month. The Prizefighter was then involved in a feud with Orton which ended when Owens landed the banned move ‘Pilerdriver’ on the Viper causing severe injury.

Last week on SmackDown, the two stars exchanged heated words and the face-off came close to a physical altercation which was avoided when the security stepped in. Rhodes and Owens had very unpleasant things to say to each other.

The Champion was irked and angry by Owens’ behavior and actions especially what he did to a legend like Orton. While Owens believed that he was betrayed by the two whom he considered a friend.

Cody stated that no one was holding Kevin back except for himself, adding that he was the face of WWE. Owens responded by stating that Rhodes thought he was afraid to pull the trigger, but he wasn’t worried. The Prizefighter further added that he loved Orton but hated Cody.

The two former friends will now lock horns in the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum to settle their feud once and for all hopefully.

Gunther vs Finn Balor vs Damian Priest – World Heavyweight Title Match

Fresh off his title defense against Damian Priest at Survivor Series: WarGames 2024, Gunther is now set to defend his Heavyweight crown once again as he locks horns in a triple-threat match against Finn Balor & Damien Priest.

The matchup was set up on the 12/02 episode of Monday Night Raw when Balor demanded a match against the Champion. Gunther declined the request as he was upset with Finn interfering during his PLE match against Priest.

Gunther instead gave a non-title match to Dominik Mysterio who was with Finn during the backstage segment. Balor attacked Gunther after the match with Dirty Dom and landed four coup de grace battering the Ring General.

This attack was the final blow from Finn as the Ring General gave him the title shot. The two stars will now face each other at SNME on December 14 in the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum.

On the December 9th episode of Monday Night Raw, Finn Balor and his faction interrupted Gunther’s promo, sparking chaos in the ring. Damian Priest soon joined the fray, as Balor and The Judgment Day unleashed a brutal assault on the Champion.

The mayhem culminated with Balor hitting the Coup de Grâce on Priest, adding even more drama to the heated confrontation. Later in the episode, General Manager Adam Pearce informed Balor that the upcoming title match at SNME would now be a triple-threat contest, featuring him, Gunther, and Damian Priest.

Liv Morgan vs Iyo Sky – Women’s World Title Match

Women’s World Champion Liv Morgan will defend her title against the #1 contender Iyo Sky at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum on December 14th.

The two faced each other recently in the women’s WarGames match, and the clash spilled over onto the Red brand as Iyo Sky & Kairi Sane (Damage CTRL) took on Liv Morgan and Raquel Rodriguez in a tag team clash.

Sky got the opportunity after she won the Battle Royal last month to earn the opportunity to face  Morgan for the World championship. Sky is a former Women’s Champion but she had never held the World title before.

Sami Zayn vs Drew McIntyre

Drew McIntyre made his highly awaited return on the 12/02 episode of the Red brand, Drew attacked Jey Uso and took out Sami Zayn with a brutal claymore in the closing moments of the episode.

On the 12/09 episode of the Red brand, McIntyre explained his actions, stating that he targeted Sami Zayn and Jey Uso because they “sold out” by reuniting with Roman Reigns.

Later in the episode during a segment with Seth Rollins, Zayn announced that he spoke with General Manager Adam Pearce, and revealed that he would face McIntyre this Saturday at SNME.

McIntyre once again attacked Zayn after the segment on the entrance ramp, WWE officials and security rushed in to diffuse the situation. Sami later confronted McIntyre backstage, leading to a physical altercation that required both men to be separated once again.

The two men will now face each other at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum this Saturday in the grudge match. This will also be Drew’s first in-ring match since his last clash with CM Punk at Bad Blood 2024.

Chelsea Green vs Michin – Women’s United States Championship

The stage is set for history to be made as the finals of the WWE Women’s United States Championship Tournament are confirmed. On this week’s SmackDown, Michin and Chelsea Green emerged victorious in their semifinal matches, earning their spots in the final showdown at the relaunched Saturday Night’s Main Event on December 14. Michin defeated Tiffany Stratton, while Green secured a win over Bayley.

This marks a pivotal moment in WWE history, as the Women’s United States Championship is set to debut. The introduction of this title is part of WWE’s effort to create parity between the men’s and women’s championship divisions. Whether it’s Michin or Green, a groundbreaking champion will be crowned on Saturday night.

Meanwhile, over on Raw, a tournament to crown the inaugural Women’s Intercontinental Champion is underway. Lyra Valkyria and Dakota Kai have both advanced to the semifinals, continuing WWE’s commitment to expanding opportunities for its women’s division.
