SmackDown was taped in Cleveland with the Undisputed Title in the spotlight.
Taped at the Rocket Arena in Cleveland, Ohio, alongside the August 31 edition of Raw, the September 4 edition of Friday Night SmackDown features a marquee Undisputed WWE Championship showdown along with a host of storylines that continue to build heading into WWE’s first-ever Sunday Night’s Main Event.
The show picks up from the fallout of Sami Zayn’s rampage, which saw him attack Kevin Owens, Finn Balor, and Gunther, costing the trio their number one contender’s match by disqualification before he laid out Champion CM Punk himself. With no clear top challenger left standing, Punk turned to a beaten-down Johnny Gargano backstage, offering him a surprise shot at the Undisputed WWE Championship.
Elsewhere, Nikki Bella’s continued targeting of Paige, Nia Jax’s pursuit of the WWE Women’s Championship after pinning Chelsea Green, and Charlotte Flair teaming with Tatum Paxley against the Women’s Tag Team Champions are all part of the build for this week’s show.
