SummerSlam 2024: A night of six championship clashes and an unforgettable grudge match
SummerSlam 2024 featured six exhilarating championship matches out of the nine titles currently active on WWE’s main roster. Notably, the WWE Tag Team Championships, World Tag Team Championships, and Women’s Tag Team Championship were not defended at the event. However, two of these titles were defended on the SmackDown episode before SummerSlam, underscoring how, under Triple H’s leadership, the treatment of championships and talent has improved significantly.
This year’s SummerSlam delivered on its high expectations. Liv Morgan opened the event spectacularly by successfully defending the Women’s World Championship. In a dramatic turn of events, Dominik Mysterio betrayed Rhea Ripley to aid Morgan, making for an unforgettable start.
Next up, Bron Breakker overcame Sami Zayn, clinching his first main roster title by becoming the new Intercontinental Champion. The hits kept coming as LA Knight managed to defeat Logan Paul for the United States Championship, despite taking a hit from Paul’s infamous brass knuckles, marking Knight’s long-awaited moment of triumph after nearly two years of fan support.
Bayley’s reign as WWE Women’s Champion came to an end at the hands of Nia Jax, who delivered a dominant performance. Yet, the biggest shock of the night was still to come. Dominik Mysterio wasn’t the only member of The Judgment Day to betray his comrades; Finn Bálor also turned on Damian Priest. During Priest’s World Heavyweight Championship defense against Gunther, Bálor interfered, placing Gunther’s foot on the ropes to force a rope break. The distraction caused by Balor’s betrayal allowed Gunther to capitalize, locking Priest in a sleeper hold and claiming the championship.
In the high-octane main event, Cody Rhodes defended his WWE Undisputed Championship against Solo Sikoa in a Bloodline Rules Match. Despite interference from Tanga Loa, Tama Tonga, and a brutal ambush by Jacob Fatu, Rhodes displayed extraordinary resilience. Just when all seemed lost, the original Tribal Chief, Roman Reigns, made a surprise return.
Instead of targeting Rhodes, Reigns attacked Solo with a Superman Punch and a Spear, allowing Rhodes to retain his title. This sets the stage for an imminent Bloodline civil war and hints at a potential Roman Reigns vs. The Rock showdown at WrestleMania 41—but that’s a story for another day. SummerSlam saw Cody Rhodes leave as the undisputed champion.
In the aftermath of the 2024 SummerSlam, take a look at who currently controls all of the main roster championships.
