In the first-ever Bad Blood event in 1997, The Undertaker faced Shawn Michaels in a Hell in a Cell match to determine the #1 Contender for the WWF Championship in the main event of the show. The winner will face Bret Hart for the title at Survivor Series. The Undertaker dominated the match and they fought on top of the cell, where Michaels fell from the top of the cage to the announcement table.
Taker gestured to finish, however Paul Bearer came out with debuting Kane, who broke the cell door to deliver a Tombstone Piledriver to the Undertaker, screwing the match for Taker and helped Michaels to win the match.
