WWE Backlash is a professional wrestling event that is produced by the American company WWE, the world’s largest professional wrestling promotion. Since its 1999 debut, eighteen events have taken place; the 18th edition took place on May 6, 2023, at the Coliseo de Puerto Rico José Miguel Agrelot in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
The idea behind the show is the backlash from WrestleMania, the main event of WWE, with the exception of the events that took place between 2016 and 2020.
Here is the list of the top five best Backlash posters of all time:
Backlash 1999
The World Wrestling Federation (WWF; WWE as of 2002) produced the first Backlash professional wrestling pay-per-view (PPV) event in 1999. That happened on April 25, 1999. The poster presented a photo of The Rock and the Mankind, where Mankind was seen giving his finisher mandible claw to the Rock.
The main feud going into the event involved the WWF Championship, which Stone Cold Steve Austin had won from The Rock at WrestleMania XV. In a different storyline, The Undertaker assumed leadership of The Ministry of Darkness, a Satanic organization of wrestlers.
He started expressing his desire for Stephanie McMahon at the beginning of the year, which led to a Hell in a Cell match at WrestleMania in which The Big Boss Man of the Corporation was hanged from the ceiling.
Backlash 2020
The 15th Backlash professional wrestling pay-per-view (PPV) and livestream event, organized by WWE, took place in 2020. All of the matches for the event were held at the WWE Performance Centre in Orlando, Florida, and it aired on June 14, 2020.
It was promoted using the main event that took place between Edge and Randy Orton and was said to be the greatest wrestling match of all time. The poster too had both of them side by side. It also consisted of a title defense from Drew McIntyre against the almighty Bobby Lashley, who was accompanied by MVP.
Backlash 2009
The 11th Backlash professional wrestling pay-per-view (PPV) event, organized by World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), took place in 2009. Wrestlers from the Raw, SmackDown, and ECW brand divisions of the promotion competed in it. On April 26, 2009, the Dunkin’ Donuts Centre in Providence, Rhode Island, hosted the event.
Backlash was replaced by Extreme Rules in 2010, so this was the last one held until 2016. The promotional poster had Randy Orton in it and the storyline consisted of a six-man tag match for the WWE Championship between The Legacy (Randy Orton, Cody Rhodes, and Ted DiBiase) and champion Triple H, Batista, and Shane McMahon.
The condition of the match was that Orton would become the new WWE champion if Triple H or any member of his team was counted out, disqualified, pinned, or submitted. The main event was John Cena defending the World Heavyweight Championship against Edge in a Last Man Standing match.
Backlash 2023
The 18th Backlash professional wrestling pay-per-view (PPV) and livestream event, organized by WWE, took place in 2023. Wrestlers from the promotion’s Raw and SmackDown brand divisions competed in it. The Coliseo de Puerto Rico José Miguel Agrelot in San Juan, Puerto Rico hosted the event on Saturday, May 6, 2023.
This was the second Backlash event to be held outside of the continental United States after the 2004 event, and the first WWE pay-per-view event to take place in Puerto Rico since January 2005’s New Year’s Revolution.
The event was hyped up due to the feud between Cody Rhodes and Brock Lesnar who were present in the poster face to face and performed at the main event too. It was the most watched and highest-grossing Backlash event in WWE history. Backlash’s viewership increased by 28% over the record set in 2022.
Backlash 2024
The poster for Backlash 2024 was released on 11th April 2024, which has Cody Rhodes with his undisputed Championship, as of now, WWE hasn’t released any match card for the same but on Saturday, May 4, 2024, at the LDLC Arena in Décines-Charpieu in Lyon Metropolis, France, will mark the 19th Backlash event.
The event, which is open to wrestlers from the promotion’s Raw and SmackDown brand divisions, will be broadcast live-streamed and available for pay-per-view (PPV). This will be the first Backlash event held outside of North America as well as the first PPV and livestreaming event hosted by WWE in France.
While we are not sure what will happen in this year’s Backlash, one can always follow the upcoming Raw and Smackdown show to find out.
