Four wrestlers from the Anoaʻi family have won the Royal Rumble match so far
One of the most prominent and influential groups of people in the pro wrestling world is the Anoa’i Family. The Anoaʻi family is a renowned wrestling dynasty from the Samoan Islands, with multiple members making their mark across various promotions, particularly in WWE.
The family has deep ties to wrestling with multiple generations of wrestlers, many of whom have reached unparalleled stardom. Some of the prominent members of the family include ‘The OTC’ Roman Reigns, Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, Yokozuna, Rikishi, Jey & Jimmy Uso, and many more.
Some other notable members of the family include Solo Sikoa, Jacob Fatu, Umaga, and Wild Samoans (Afa and Sika). The Anoaʻi family has become synonymous with the WWE, and members of the family have amassed multiple accolades and titles in the promotion.
Here, we will take a look at one such accolade, which is winning the men’s Royal Rumble match. The Royal Rumble is a professional wrestling match that follows Battle Royal rules, where participants eliminate opponents by tossing them over the top rope. The match usually features 30 competitors, with two wrestlers starting and new entrants joining every 90 seconds until all participants are in the ring.
The first Royal Rumble event was held in 1988 and initially only featured the men’s Rumble match. In 2018, the WWE introduced the same match in the women’s division and since then the PLE has always featured two Rumble matches.
4. Yokozuna
WWE legend Yokozuna was the first wrestler of Samoan descent to hold the WWF World Heavyweight Championship (WWE Championship). He was a two-time WWF World Heavyweight Champion and two-time WWF Tag Team Champion (World Tag Team Champion) with Owen Hart.
Yokozuna was also the first wrestler from the Anoaʻi family to win the Royal Rumble match. The Samoan won the 1993 Royal Rumble match which was held at the ARCO Arena in Sacramento, California.
3. The Rock
Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson is one of the biggest names to come from the Anoaʻi family who transcended the sport and became one of the biggest megastars in the world. Johnson has transitioned into action after a successful stint in the WWE and is now one of the biggest names in Hollywood.
The Rock was the second wrestler from the Anoaʻi family to win the Royal Rumble match an accolade he captured at the 2000 Royal Rumble PLE which was held at Madison Square Garden in New York City, New York. Johnson eliminated Big Show to win the match and punched his ticket to WrestleMania.
2. Roman Reigns
‘The OTC’ Roman Reigns is one of the most dominant active stars from the Anoaʻi family. The OTC who initially started his journey in the WWE with the Sheild (Dean Ambrose and Seth Rollins) turned into the face of the company kicking off one of the most dominant Undisputed WWE title reigns which lasted 1316 days.
Shortly after starting his singles reign in 2015, Reigns won the 2015 Royal Rumble match and became the third wrestler from the Samoan descent to do so. Reigns eliminated Rusev to win the 2015 match which was held at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
1. Jey Uso
‘Main Event’ Jey Uso is the son of the legendary WWE star Rikishi and joined the WWE alongside his brother Jimmy Uso. Together, the two brothers formed a tag team known as the Usos which went on to dominate the tag team division.
In 2023, Jey kicked off his singles run, which saw him become a viral sensation and rise to prominence with a short Intercontinental title reign and multiple high-profile matches. Jey shocked the world on February 1, 2025, when he defied all odds and eliminated the 16-time WWE World Champion John Cena to win the 2025 Men’s Rumble match. Jey became the fourth wrestler from the Anoaʻi family to win the prestigious match.
