WWE has seen multiple father-son duos win the workhorse title of the company.
WWE has seen the influx of many superstars and their next generations, who have taken the company by storm. Many first-generation wrestlers made their legacies, and their successors took it to the next level. However, a select few have been able to accomplish a rare feat: surrounding a major championship.
That prestigious title is the WWE Intercontinental Championship, introduced by WWE Hall of Famer Pat Patterson. The title has been in the promotion for decades and held by many legends such as Shawn Michaels, The Rock, Triple H, Bret Hart, and many others.
In a rare accomplishment, three father-son duos have held the workhorse title during their active in-ring careers. These selected superstars have held the title in various eras, and the workhorse championship has been a stepping stone or an important accolade in their respective careers.
3. Mr Perfect & Curtis Axel
Mr Perfect Curt Hennig is regarded as one of the top legends of WWE. The WWE Intercontinental Championship has been synonymous with his legacy.
Mr Perfect won the title in the late 1980s and held it a total of two times. Decades later, his son, Curtis Axel, won the championship with the assistance of Paul Heyman in 2013, making them the first father-son duo to claim the prestigious championship.
2. Jey Uso & Rikishi
Rikish was one of the heaviest and most popular WWE superstars in the early 2000s. The only major singles title he won was the WWE Intercontinental Championship, which he first won in 2000. That was the only time he held the good.
24 Years later, Rikishi’s son, Jey Uso, followed in his father’s footsteps. He defeated Bron Breakker to win the Intercontinental title in 2024 on an episode of RAW to join this elite class of superstars.
1. Rey Mysterio & Dominik Mysterio
Rey Mysterio has been one of the most accomplished WWE legends of all time. In regards to the Intercontinental Championship, Mysterio first won the title in a short encounter against JBL at WrestleMania 25. He then won the title two more times.
Around 16 years later, at WrestleMania 41, his estranged son, Dominik Mysterio, won the same title in a Fatal 4-Way match, much to the loud pop of the same audience who have berated him for the majority of his WWE career.
