During a recent appearance on the Muscle Memory podcast, David Otunga spoke candidly about the tension that existed between Nexus members and John Cena following their loss to Team WWE at SummerSlam 2010. The Nexus storyline had taken WWE by storm that summer, and many believed the group was destined for dominance until that fateful night.

“Always. Are you kidding me? Yeah, of course,” Otunga said when asked whether there was tension with Cena after the match. He implied that Cena used his position to alter the original ending, which reportedly would have seen Nexus emerge victorious over Team WWE.

The finish, as it aired, saw Cena single-handedly defeat Justin Gabriel and Wade Barrett, effectively burying the group’s momentum. Otunga suggested that Cena’s decision played a major role in derailing what could have been one of WWE’s most memorable factions.

John Cena also blamed for the Nexus documentary never being released

Otunga didn’t stop there. The former WWE Tag Team Champion claimed that Cena’s backstage pull extended far beyond that single match outcome. He alleged that the much-rumored Nexus documentary was shelved because of Cena’s influence.

“Hey, why do you think they never brought the Nexus back? Why do you think they never released the Nexus documentary? John Cena does have a lot of pull there,” Otunga said.

While WWE never confirmed the existence of a completed Nexus documentary, rumors about the project circulated for years. If Otunga’s claims are true, Cena’s creative power during that era may have had a lasting impact on how the group’s legacy was remembered.

This isn’t the first time Cena has faced criticism over the SummerSlam 2010 match. Other former Nexus members, including Wade Barrett, have previously hinted at frustrations over how their storyline was handled. Still, Cena has long defended the decision, arguing that WWE’s storytelling priorities at the time justified the finish.
