Fun Fact: AAA Mega Championship becomes first Mexican title defended on both AEW & WWE TV

The AAA Mega Championship was introduced in 2007.

The AAA Mega Championship was introduced by Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide in 2007. Following WWE’s acquisition of AAA, stars from the Stamford-based promotion have also competed for the championship. Current titleholder Dominik Mysterio is among the WWE talent to hold the prestigious title.

Mysterio is in his first title reign and has held the title for 242 days and counting. Last night, on the May 12 edition of Monday Night Raw, Dominik defended the title for the third time. Notably, while his earlier two defenses have been on AAA programming, this was the first time the title was featured on WWE Television.

While Dominik defeated “Original” El Grande Americano to retain the title after Los Americanos (El Grande, Rayo & Bravo Americano) interfered in the match, the match itself created history.

Kenny Omega defended the AAA Mega title on AEW

With the feature on WWE Television, the AAA Mega title became the first Mexican title in history to be defended on both AEW and WWE Television. Speaking of AEW, the title was featured in 2020 during Kenny Omega’s title reign.

AEW star Kenny captured the title at AAA Heroes In⁠mortales XIII in 2019, defeating the then-champion Rey Fenix. Omega’s first title defense came on AEW TV during AEW Dark Episode #8, when Kenny battled Jack Evans.

Omega defended the AAA Mega title a second time against Sammy Guevara during the March 25, 2020, edition of AEW Dynamite. Kenny’s title reign lasted 765 days after he was defeated by Andrade El Idolo.

On the other hand, while the title was featured on Raw and even some PLEs, since Dominik won the title, the May 12 edition of Monday Night Raw became the first where the title was actually defended, etching its name in the history books.
