Goldberg is best known for his time in WCW

Goldberg is known for his intensity, dominance, and unmatched winning streak in the late ’90s, but behind the scenes, things weren’t always so simple.

According to former WCW writer Vince Russo, the WWE Hall of Famer once flat-out refused to lose a match to another legend of the business, Scott Steiner.

The revelation came during the latest episode of The Coach & Bro Show, hosted by Russo and former WWE commentator Jonathan Coachman. Reflecting on an incident from nearly 25 years ago, Russo painted a clear picture of Goldberg’s stubbornness and ego during his WCW prime.

“I needed Goldberg to do a job to Scott Steiner, okay, for the title. Goldberg refused to do it,” Russo explained. “So I said, ‘Bill, why?’ He looked at me and said, ‘If this were a shoot, I would kick Scott Steiner’s a**.’”

Goldberg had multiple matches with Scott Steiner

The writer was quick to call Goldberg’s bluff and test his bravado. “I said, ‘Bill, I’ll tell you what. Scott is standing right over there. You go tell that to Steiner and see what he tells you.” Russo added that he doubts the same ego exists in Goldberg 25 years later, but at the time, it was front and center.

Scott Steiner, known as “Big Poppa Pump,” had his own legacy as a powerhouse, with accolades that matched Goldberg’s in many ways. A former WCW World Heavyweight Champion and multi-time tag champion with his brother Rick, Steiner was not a man many would dare challenge, especially outside the ring.

Interestingly, Da Man and Steiner would eventually clash multiple times. They faced off five times in WCW and once in WWE in a triple threat match involving Test. Notably, Goldberg did lose to Steiner at WCW Fall Brawl 2000 in a no-disqualification match, proving that the “refusal to lose” didn’t last forever.

Now, with Da Man preparing for what’s expected to be his final match against Gunther on July 12 at Saturday Night’s Main Event, fans can only hope history doesn’t repeat itself. Will the Hall of Famer do the honors on the way out, or will his old-school mentality resurface?

With the spotlight once again on him, stories like these serve as a reminder that the wrestling ring isn’t just about wins and losses, it’s also about ego, pride, and the politics that shape careers.
