The “In-Ring General” has stormed his way through the main roster since his debut

Gunther is one of the most dominant professional wrestlers in the modern era, who is currently having a great run in WWE. The mighty Austrian has been in professional wrestling since 2005 and wrestled across some of the major European, English and Japanese promotions and in a number of Independent circuits before he stepped foot in WWE.

The Ring General has been in WWE since 2019 and has always been the top guy, whichever brand he steps his foot in. He had a long history with NXT and NXT UK, where he spent three long years, before making his main roster debut in 2022. Gunther is currently a top star in the main roster and is a guaranteed future world champion. Talking about championships, here we take a look at all of Gunther’s Championship reigns in WWE.

Gunther’s Championship reigns in WWE

Gunther has won a total of two championship reigns in WWE so far, including the NXT UK Championship and Intercontinental Championship. Here is a detailed view of Gunther’s championship reign.

NXT UK Championship reign

Gunther under the name Walter made his WWE debut for the NXT UK brand in January 2019, confronting the WWE UK Champion, Pete Dunne after his title reign. Two months after his debut, Walter made it clear about his intentions and challenged Pete Dunne for the NXT UK Championship.

At NXT TakeOver: New York, Walter defeated Dunne to end Dunne’s record-setting 685 days reign to win the title for the first time. In February 2021, he surpassed Dunne’s title reign and became the longest-reigning NXT UK Champion.

Gunther then called Walter surpassed two years with the title and finally dropped it to Ilja Dragunov at NXT TakeOver 36, to end his 870-day reign. It was the longest reign in WWE history since 1988, however, Roman Reigns surpassed it with his Universal title reign in 2023.

Intercontinental Championship

In 2022, Walter under the name Gunther debuted on the main roster at the SmackDown brand, with his fellow Imperium member, Ludwig Kaiser. Within months after his main roster debut, Gunther went on to challenge Ricochet for the Intercontinental Championship and won the title to become the first Austrian to win the IC title.

In February 2023, Gunther surpassed Shelton Benjamin’s 245-day reign to become the longest-reigning Intercontinental Champion of the 21st Century. Later the same month, Gunther surpassed WWE Hall of Famer Mr. Perfect’s 280 days reign to become the longest-reigning Intercontinental Champion of the last 34 years.

In September 2023, Gunther broke the all-time record of The Honky Tonk Man’s reign of 454 days to become the longest-reigning Intercontinental Champion of all time. In October 2023, he reached the 500-day milestone for his Intercontinental Championship reign and became the first one to achieve this landmark.

At Royal Rumble 2024, he became the first person to carry the IC title for more than 20 months in a single reign. The Ring General finally dropped the title at WrestleMania 40 Night 1 to Sami Zayn to end his historical 666 days reign.
