Gunther is one of the most powerful and dominant stars in WWE
“The Ring General” Gunther is one of the best-in-class professional wrestlers on the active WWE roster. He has been an impressive wrestler from day 1 in WWE and has been proving his caliber since his NXT UK time. Gunther wrestled in NXT & NXT UK under the name Walter and was the longest reigning NXT UK champion with 870 days reign.
Making his way to the main roster, he became the longest-reigning Intercontinental Champion of all time with a monumental reign of 666 days. Following that he captured the World Heavyweight Championship and is the reigning champion on his first reign. The World Champion is turning 37 today and here we take a look at the top five best matches of Gunther in WWE history.
5. Gunther vs Sami Zayn
At WrestleMania 40 Night 1, Gunther defended his Intercontinental Championship against the Ultimate Underdog Sami Zayn in a singles match. The Mighty Austrian dominated the match right from the start and made no room for Sami.
However, in the final moments, Sami fired up and delivered the Brainbuster followed by a couple of Helluva Kick and made the champ unconscious to pin and end Gunther’s 666 days IC title reign. The match received 4.25 ratings and was one of the best matches of WrestleMania.

On the December 16, 2022, episode of SmackDown, Gunther defended his Intercontinental Championship against Ricochet in a championship rematch. Ricochet used his extreme superhuman abilities to take control of the champ and took him to the near fall.
However, the Mighty Austrian tossed him across the ring and brutally punished him to retain the title. The match received 4.75 star ratings and it is the first near five star rating of the Ring General in the main roster.
3. Gunther vs Sheamus
At Clash at the Castle 2022, Gunther defended his Intercontinental Championship on the line against Sheamus in Cardiff, Wales, United Kingdom. Sheamus was the UK’s favorite for the match. The match went on to a brutal phase, where Sheamus took the Ring General to the limit and was so close to becoming the Grand Slam Champion.
However, in the final moments, Gunther countered the Brogue kick and delivered a powerbomb and the clothesline to retain the title. After the match, Sheamus received a standing ovation from the WWE Universe & received 5-star ratings.
2. Gunther vs Sheamus & Drew McIntyre

The match went brutally with all the three trying to punish each other. Both the challengers had the chance to dethrone The RIng General for the IC title, but ended up with the third person involvement.
In the final moments of the match, Sheamus performed a Brogue Kick on McIntyre, but Gunther stopped the in with the splash and powerbombed Sheamus over McIntyre and bombed McIntyre again to retain the title. The match received 5 star rating and it was considered as one of the best matches of that year’s WrestleMania.
1. Ilja Dragunov vs Walter
