The American Nightmare retained the title last night.
‘The American Nightmate’ Cody Rhodes managed to outmaneuver Randy Orton, while dealing with Pat McAfee, to retain the title in the chaotic main event of Night 1 of WWE WrestleMania 42 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas yesterday.
The win marked Rhodes’ first title defense after capturing the title in the lead-up to Mania by defeating Drew McIntyre to kick off his third reign. However, what transpired after the match has left Cody on the injured list of WWE superstars.
Cody Rhodes suffered an orbital injury

Orton, who was already irked and dealing with back pain, took out Pat McAfee with an RKO, a move that ended up costing him the match. This further angered the Viper, who then grabbed the title from Rhodes’ hands and whipped him with it.
Orton then lined up Cody for the infamous Punt Kick and delivered the devastating move, leaving the Champion unconscious as more blood poured from his face. During the post-show last night, it was revealed that the medical team was tending to Rhodes’ left eye, which was completely shut after the attack.
During the Night 2 Countdown show, Jackie Redmond revealed that Rhodes has not been medically cleared because of an orbital injury. She also added that there is currently no set timeline for his return.
Additionally, after coming out of the match bloodied, Rhodes needed three stitches to his face and four staples in the back of his head. BodySlam+ has backed this update, reporting that its sources said the head injury he suffered required multiple staples afterwards.
While WWE is attributing the injury to the punt kick by Orton, PWInsider reports that Rhodes’ orbital injury was caused by a punch from Orton just moments before he also hit referee Charles Robinson with an RKO. The report added that the swelling around Rhodes’ eye developed shortly afterwards.
Rhodes’ appearance at WWE World has been cancelled due to the injury. However, it remains unclear if this leads into additinal absence on WWE Programming.
