Royce Keys sustained an injury after Jacob Fatu’s attack.
Royce Keys is set to be out of action indefinitely after suffering an injury at the hands of Jacob Fatu on last week’s episode of WWE RAW.
Michael Cole announced on this Monday’s Raw in Norfolk, Virginia, that Keys suffered a bruised larynx and cervical strain following the brutal conclusion to his street fight against Fatu, which headlined the previous week’s RAW.
Fatu continued his assault after the match, using a chair before delivering a devastating hip attack to Keys. The 41-year-old was eventually stretchered out of the arena after the show, with WWE later sharing footage of the aftermath on its YouTube channel.
The angle immediately raised questions about the severity of Keys’ condition and how long he could be absent from WWE programming.
Royce Keys injury appears to be part of WWE storyline
Despite the injury announcement, the latest backstage information suggests that Keys’ absence is not the result of a legitimate injury.
Dave Meltzer reported in last week’s Wrestling Observer Newsletter that the segment was an angle and specifically noted that it was “not an injury cover angle.” That indicates WWE is using the storyline to write Keys off television rather than dealing with a genuine medical setback.
The development also comes shortly after Keys competed in one of the biggest matches of his WWE run. Just two days before the Fatu attack, Keys teamed with LA Knight and Solo Sikoa to defeat Fatu and The Usos at SummerSlam.
Keys signed with WWE in January and made his debut at the Royal Rumble. He later made his television debut more than two months afterward on SmackDown, beginning his transition into a regular presence on WWE programming.
What happens next for Royce Keys?

With Keys now written off television, his next move will likely depend on how WWE plans to progress the rivalry with Fatu.
The storyline injury gives the company an opportunity to build anticipation for Keys’ eventual return while allowing Fatu’s recent attack to carry significant consequences.
For now, WWE has presented Keys as being sidelined indefinitely, although the available backstage report suggests fans should not expect the absence to be treated as a legitimate long-term injury.
Is Royce Keys legitimately injured?
The injury appears to be part of a WWE storyline rather than a legitimate injury.
