Jey Uso recently defended the World Heavyweight title against Seth Rollins
‘Main Event’ Jey Uso did the unthinkable at WrestleMania 41 (Saturday), defeating Gunther in an inspiring underdog story to become the new World Heavyweight Champion. This was his first World title in the WWE, as he had only captured the Intercontinental title and Tag Team titles before.
Since winning the title, Jey, as expected, has been the target of contenders who want to hold the coveted World title. On the recent May 05 episode of Monday Night Raw, he was lured into an impromptu title defense against Seth Rollins by Paul Heyman.
Heyman interrupted Jey’s segment and managed to convince him to put the title on the line on the show. Jey and Rollins put on an instant classic, which saw both stars push each other to the brink of their limits. The match also saw interference from Bron Breakker, which Sami Zayn tried to counter.
However, the match ended in disqualification when Bron Breakker attacked Jey. As Rollins tried to capitalize, CM Punk made a surprise return, attacking Rollins and causing the disqualification, ultimately saving both Jey and Zayn from a further beatdown, and preserving Jey’s title.
Jey Uso will defend the World Heavyweight title against Logan Paul
Former United States Champion Logan Paul voiced his intentions of battling Jey Uso for the title on the April 28 show of Monday Night Raw. However, the segment turned violent when Jey answered Paul’s taunts with a superkick.
Paul not only retaliated backstage on the show later, but also ambushed him after WWE Raw (May 05) went off air, and Jey was embracing his fans ringside after a brutal title showdown with Rollins. The attack made the feud even more personal, signaling a clash soon.
According to Dave Meltzer on Wrestling Observer Radio, the promotion decided to air the angle after Raw went off air to “surprise people.”
“I was really surprised that they shot the angle after the show went off the air. It was by design with the idea of ‘Oh, we’re gonna push it on social media.’ That was the mentality, to surprise people after the show went off the air,” Meltzer said.
During a Q&A session with veteran journalist Bill Apter, Joe from WrestleVotes revealed that Jey may defend his title at the upcoming Saturday Night’s Main Event. He noted that the promotion appears to be slowly building a rivalry between the two, potentially leading to a showdown at the May 24 event, which will air from Tampa, Florida.
“Don’t believe so but I could see that match happening at the May 24th Saturday Night’s Main Event. So, we’ll see. But I think that’s where they’re going.”
