The 16-time WWE World Champion will retire at the end of 2025.

Before announcing the news of his retirement, the 16-time WWE World Champion John Cena made an appearance on ESPN’s First Take. Cena announced at the Money in the Bank 2024 PLE that he will hang up his wrestling boots at the end of 2025.

He kicked off his retirement tour at the Raw Netflix debut show on January 6, 2025, and participated in the 2025 men’s Royal Rumble and Elimination Chamber match. He has won the Chamber match and is now set to battle Undisputed WWE Champion Cody Rhodes at WrestleMania 41.

During the interview, which originally aired in March 2024, Cena was asked to reveal his top three female wrestlers who would be featured on his personal Mount Rushmore of women’s wrestling. Before answering the question, Cena said he would change the question and then named his top five wrestlers of all time.

“I’d say Bayley, Becky Lynch, Bianca Belair, Rhea Ripley and Charlotte Flair, that’s my top five!” Cena stated.

John Cena’s modified Mount Rushmore list:

John Cena Sr. has no idea why his son aligned with The Rock

The 16-time WWE World Champion shocked the entire world when he, for the first time in his decades-long WWE career, turned heel and aligned with The Rock. After aligning with The Rock, Cena launched an assault on Cody Rhodes, leaving him bloodied and gasping for air.

During an interview with Bill Apter on Sportskeeda Wrestle Binge, Cena’s father was asked why Cena was doing this and if he had any conversation with his son regarding his unexpected heel turn. Cena Sr. seemed irked by the question and went off on Apter, stating that he is tired of everyone asking him the question.

“I’m tired of the other phone calls I’m getting. I don’t know why he did what he did. You’re gonna have to get that from him. I’m so tired of this. Why don’t we just let it play out and find out what’s happening?” John Cena Sr. stated.

Nic Nemeth & Mick Foley react to the heel turn of the decade

In a recent appearance on the Busten Open Radio alongside Former TNA World Champion Nic Nemeth, WWE legend Mick Foley commented on Cena’s heel turn and aligning with The Rock. Foley also discussed Cena nailing the facial expression during the segment.

That look on Cena’s face, oh, that was bright. I mean, that’ll go down in wrestling lore. And I think that’s where Hollywood has really served him well because it wasn’t an overblown reaction. It just, he looked like a different person. It was like he transformed like I know that’s John Cena, but he’s like John Cena whose soul has been taken,

Yeah, I thought it was great. Him and The Final Boss together, you know, The Rock really embracing this role. But Cena is so good and seemingly so immersed in this. The ironic thing is that the people used to hate him are gonna love him. And there’s probably a lot of kids pretty upset about this.” Foley stated.
