John Cena is one of the greatest WWE superstars of all-time!
John Cena has battled some of the biggest names in WWE history, but when it comes to his toughest WrestleMania opponent, his answer might surprise some fans.
Speaking at Fan Expo Boston this past Saturday, the 17-time world champion told Justin Barrasso that the most challenging match of his career was against the late Bray Wyatt at WWE WrestleMania 36.
Cena specifically pointed to their unique Firefly Funhouse match as the bout that pushed him the most.
“The reason that the opponent was tough—and I know it was against Bray Wyatt—was because that was more or less a match against me,” Cena explained. “I’ll say that was my toughest match.”
The cinematic showdown was unlike anything WWE had ever produced, combining surreal storytelling with deep nods to Cena’s career and legacy.
John Cena reveals his WrestleMania 36 as his toughest match
The Firefly Funhouse match was a journey through Cena’s past, with Wyatt manipulating the narrative at every turn.
The match opened with a re-creation of Cena’s 2002 “Ruthless Aggression” debut, only this time Wyatt played the role of Kurt Angle.
It shifted through different eras of John Cena’s career, including a bizarre sequence where he appeared in WCW’s New World Order colors.
The contest ended when The Fiend hit Sister Abigail and followed up with the Mandible Claw, leaving Cena laid out.
The match, held during the COVID-19 pandemic, had no live crowd but remains one of the most talked-about WrestleMania moments of the modern era.
John Cena’s farewell tour and what’s next

With only months left in his farewell tour, Cena has been mixing nostalgia with high-profile matches. Earlier this year, he shocked fans by turning heel at Elimination Chamber, only to revert to his babyface persona in the weeks leading up to SummerSlam.
At The Biggest Party of the Summer, Cena lost the Undisputed WWE Title to Cody Rhodes before being attacked by a returning Brock Lesnar.
Cena’s next stop is Clash in Paris on August 31, where he will face Logan Paul. The match came together on last Friday’s SmackDown, when Paul interrupted Cena during a promo about Lesnar’s return.
The two exchanged heated words before Paul, alongside Drew McIntyre, attacked Cena. Cody Rhodes intervened, leading Cena to accept Paul’s challenge.
As his farewell run winds down, Cena is expected to face Lesnar in one of his final matches, with each stop on the tour carrying added emotional weight for fans who have followed him for over two decades.
