John Cena retired at SNME in December 2025.

John Cena may have officially stepped away from in-ring competition, but the WWE icon is still leaving the door slightly open for a possible return. The Cenation Leader recently addressed growing fan speculation about another match and explained exactly what it would take for him to wrestle again.

Cena retired from active competition following Saturday Night’s Main Event in December 2025, where he suffered a loss to Gunther. Since then, both the 17-time world champion and WWE Chief Content Officer Triple H have repeatedly stated that Cena intends to remain retired from in-ring action.

Despite those comments, many fans continue to believe that The Chain Gang Soldier still has one final match left in him. The immense crowd reactions he continues to receive whenever he appears only add more fuel to the speculation surrounding a potential comeback.

John Cena says a return would come at a massive cost

Speaking during an interview with US Weekly, John Cena admitted that he dislikes speaking in absolutes and avoided completely shutting down the idea of another match. However, he also made it clear that convincing him to return would come at an enormous price.

Cena said: “I hate speaking in absolutes … ‘Never’ is a strong word. It would be financial suicide for someone to court me in a position where I would have another match, and I truly mean that. So if you’re in the business of torching currency, that’s the only way to get me back in the ring.”

While the statement may disappoint fans hoping for another WWE appearance under the bright lights, it also confirms that John Cena has not completely ruled out the possibility forever. Instead, the veteran star appears fully committed to protecting the legacy of his retirement.

Cena explained that he feels deeply fulfilled with the way his career ended. At the same time, hearing fans constantly chant for “one more match” has inspired him to remain creatively involved with WWE in a different role.

John Cena Classic Tournament excites the WWE veteran

The former WWE Champion revealed that fan demand directly inspired the idea behind the upcoming John Cena Classic Tournament. According to Cena, the concept allows him to stay connected with the WWE Universe without placing the physical and emotional pressure of performing at the elite level he once demanded from himself.

“Aside from that, the reason ‘one more match’ resonated so well for me, first of all, I got to express to the fans of how fulfilled I felt when I retired.”

He continued by explaining how the tournament could help him remain active around WWE while spotlighting the next generation of performers. Cena emphasized that he now wants younger stars to shine in ways he no longer feels capable of doing himself.

The Last Real Champion added: “I’m trying to think in my head, ‘How can we gear this to where I can be there, be active and be included, but allow others to do the thing I can no longer do?’ I hope we have it with the John Cena Classic.”

Although no official schedule or format has been revealed for the John Cena Classic Tournament, the concept has already generated significant curiosity among WWE fans. Even without wrestling again, Cena clearly intends to remain an important part of WWE’s future.
