The 17-time world champion is set to face CM Punk at Night of Champions

On June 20th, WWE SmackDown gave fans something special. John Cena dropped one of the best promos of his career, and quite possibly the best of his current heel run.

In a single segment, John Cena reignited his legendary feud with CM Punk and reminded the WWE Universe exactly why he’s still one of the sharpest talkers & the greatest of all time in the game.

After weeks of CM Punk lighting him up on the mic, John Cena finally fired back and it was nuclear. Live, raw, and unfiltered, the 17-time world champion delivered a blistering, reality-soaked promo that blurred the lines between fiction and fact.

He didn’t just go after Punk, he sent shockwaves across the entire wrestling landscape by name-dropping AEW’s Claudio Castagnoli, TNA’s Nic Nemeth, and Matt Cardona.

For longtime fans, it instantly drew comparisons to Cena’s most iconic promos, his scathing 2012 verbal beatdown of The Rock, and his ruthless dismantling of Roman Reigns in 2017 where he famously told Reigns, “It’s called a promo, kid.” Those moments helped define Cena’s legacy as a top-tier mic worker, but this June 20th promo? It hit differently.

This version of John Cena was cold and calculated; every word had weight. No pandering. No cheap heel heat. Just controlled fury, delivered with the confidence of a man who’s been at the top for two decades.

And it worked. The crowd ate it up, and social media lit up with fans calling it one of Cena’s most “pipebomb-like” promos ever.

And all of this happened after a bizarre show-long thread involving R-Truth, Aleister Black, and a surprise DQ finish. Truth attacked Kit Wilson earlier in the night and called for his rematch with Cena.

The match happened, but Cena got himself disqualified using the WWE title. While the R-Truth storyline felt slightly derailed, what came next stole the night.

As Punk hit the ring post-match, Cena turned up the heat. He planted Punk with an Attitude Adjustment through a table, then grabbed the mic and flipped the script.

In a full-circle moment that mirrored Punk’s legendary 2011 pipebomb, Cena delivered his own—a heel’s truth bomb, but laced with authenticity and power.

So was this John Cena’s greatest promo ever? It just might be. But still, it’s subjective. While his promos against The Rock and Roman Reigns are still classics, this one had a different edge. It felt personal. It felt dangerous. And it set the stage for a Punk-Cena showdown that could redefine their entire rivalry.

One thing’s clear: this is the version of John Cena fans have been waiting for. And if this feud keeps trending upward, CM Punk better come loaded at WWE Night of Champions 2025 because Cena isn’t pulling any punches.
