The Phenomenal One has been absent from WWE programming since the PLE.

‘The Phenomenal’ AJ Styles has been absent from WWE programming since losing the career threatning match against ‘Career Killer’ Gunther at the 2026 edition of Royal Rumble in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia two weeks ago.

The result sparked speculations regarding his future in the company, and rumors regarding Styles’ signing with rival promotions also started circulating online. Amid speculations, Styles made his first appearance since Rumble at the February 5 episode of What’s Your Story? with Stephanie McMahon.

During the discussion, he was asked about the moment when he went to remove his gloves, but chose against it after the loss. Styles said he isn’t sure why he kept the gloves on, but emphasized that he isn’t closing the door completely. The Phenomenal One also floated the idea of possibly returning for a special moment, such as teaming with his son in the future.

In addition, the former WWE World Champion also acknowledged that the time will eventually come when he will bid farewell to the squared circle for good, but noted that it’s unclear whether that moment has already arrived.

Additionally, reports suggested Styles’ contract expiring around the Rumle PLE, which further sparked rumors of him joining TNA or AEW. Now, a recent report from PWInsider Elite has provided some clarity regarding Styles’ status with the company.

PWInsider reports that AJ Styles and WWE had been negotiating a potential new contract, but with the Royal Rumble fast approaching and no deal officially in place, WWE moved forward with booking his career threatning clash against Gunther.

While discussions between the two sides are said to be continuing, there has been no word that Styles has signed a new agreement. In addition, it was noted that if his existing contract lapses, he would be able to consider other options as a free agent.

However, there’s currently no indication that the Phenomenal One is preparing for an immediate return to the ring, and nothing has been confirmed about what his next move in the pro-wrestling world might be.

The report also added that the decision was his to retire at the PLE, as he felt it was especially meaningful given that it marked the 10th anniversary of his WWE debut at the event.

As of now, Styles’ status with the company remains under discussion, with no clarity of his potential in-ring return or jumping ship to join AEW or even TNA.

Has AJ Styles contract with WWE expired?

As of early February 2026, AJ Styles’ contract with WWE is believed to have been set to expire around February 2026. Per PWInsider, while discussions between the two sides are said to be continuing, there has been no word that Styles has signed a new agreement.

Could AJ Styles sign with AEW?

In theory, if his existing contract lapses, he would be able to consider other options as a free agent. However, there is no current sign of him jumping ship to AEW.
