Cody Rhodes was attacked by Kevin Owens after SNME went off-air
WWE fans were left in shock following a post-show assault on Cody Rhodes after Saturday Night’s Main Event in Long Island, New York.
Kevin Owens in a brutal display attacked the reigning Undisputed WWE Champion with a devastating package piledriver after the show went off the air. The incident capped off an already eventful night, leaving Rhodes stretchered out and sparking widespread concern about his condition.
According to WWE’s official statement, shared on both their website and social media platforms, Rhodes sustained significant injuries in the aftermath of the assault:
“The historic return of Saturday Night’s Main Event ended with Cody Rhodes retaining the Undisputed WWE Title in a thrilling match, but Kevin Owens would bring an end to the night with a heinous attack on The American Nightmare after the broadcast went off the air. Earlier today it was confirmed that Cody Rhodes suffered cervical swelling and was kept overnight at a local hospital for observation.
“While X-rays were negative for a fracture, Rhodes has been officially diagnosed with axial compression of the cervical spine, as well as a cervical strain with spasm. Be sure to follow WWE on social media for the latest updates on the Undisputed WWE Champion’s status.”
This marks the first instance in recent memory where Kevin Owens has launched such a calculated and brutal assault, raising questions about his motivations and his role in the championship picture moving forward. The attack also saw a rare post-show confrontation between Owens and Triple H, further intensifying speculation about WWE’s creative direction heading into the new year.
As for Cody Rhodes, the Undisputed WWE Champion now finds himself in uncharted territory. While X-rays have ruled out a fracture, the severity of his injuries remains a concern, particularly with the diagnosis of axial compression of the cervical spine. WWE has yet to confirm whether Rhodes will miss any ring time or upcoming appearances.
Spoilers from the latest SmackDown tapings suggest Rhodes may still make an appearance, but whether this is in a non-physical capacity remains to be seen. With the Road to WrestleMania heating up, Cody Rhodes’ status will undoubtedly be a major focal point for fans and WWE officials alike.
