Hell in a Cell is one of WWE’s most iconic and unforgiving match stipulations. Introduced in 1997, the match features a massive steel structure surrounding both the ring and the ringside area, designed to prevent outside interference and force bitter rivals to settle their differences inside the cage.

Unlike a traditional Steel Cage Match, the Cell’s door is locked with chains and a padlock, and victory can only be achieved by pinfall or submission. There are no disqualifications, making it one of the most brutal environments in professional wrestling history.

The inaugural WWE Hell in a Cell match took place at Badd Blood: In Your House on October 5, 1997, where Shawn Michaels defeated The Undertaker in a match remembered for the debut of Kane. Since then, the stipulation has produced countless unforgettable moments, including The Undertaker’s legendary clashes with Mankind, Triple H and Edge, as well as modern classics involving Roman Reigns, Becky Lynch, Sasha Banks, Cody Rhodes and CM Punk.

Originally standing 16 feet tall and weighing more than two tons, the Cell was redesigned in 2006 into a sturdier 20-foot, five-ton structure. WWE later launched the annual Hell in a Cell premium live event in 2009 before retiring the themed show in 2022, choosing instead to reserve the stipulation for feuds that truly warrant it.

As of SummerSlam 2026, WWE has held or announced 54 Hell in a Cell matches.

WWE Hell in a Cell’s legacy in WWE

Hell in a Cell remains one of WWE’s most prestigious match types because it is reserved for rivalries that have reached their breaking point. The Undertaker helped define the stipulation through several unforgettable performances, while Triple H, Randy Orton, Roman Reigns, Brock Lesnar, Edge and others have continued to build its legacy.

The match has also played a significant role in elevating the women’s division, with Charlotte Flair, Sasha Banks, Becky Lynch and Bayley all competing in historic Cell encounters.

Although the annual Hell in a Cell premium live event no longer exists, the match itself remains one of WWE’s biggest attractions. Every time the Cell returns, it signals that a rivalry is about to reach its brutal conclusion.
