WWE Women’s US Championship was unveiled in 2024
The WWE Women’s United States Championship is a professional wrestling title introduced by WWE and is defended on the SmackDown brand.
It stands as one of the two secondary championships for women on WWE’s main roster, with the WWE Women’s Intercontinental Championship being its counterpart over on Raw.
The title was officially unveiled during an episode of SmackDown on November 8, 2024, adding more prestige and opportunities for the women’s division.
To crown the first ever Women’s United States Champion, WWE announced a tournament that kicked off on the November 15, 2024 episode of SmackDown.
The tournament featured top female Superstars battling it out across several weeks and episodes leading up to the big finals. The tournament concluded at the Saturday Night’s Main Event special on December 14, 2024, where the inaugural champion was crowned.
This new championship continues to give rising stars and established names another major prize to chase on Friday nights.
WWE Women’s US Championship legacy
Before the November 15, 2024, episode of SmackDown, SmackDown General Manager Nick Aldis announced that the tournament to crown the inaugural WWE Women’s United States Champion would officially begin that night.
WWE Chief Content Officer Paul “Triple H” Levesque later revealed the tournament bracket featuring 12 women from the SmackDown roster. The first round included four triple-threat matches, with the winners advancing to the semifinals for one-on-one matches.
The winners of those matches would then move on to the tournament final scheduled for Saturday Night’s Main Event XXXVII on December 14, 2024.
The announced participants were Bayley, B-Fab, Candice LeRae and Bianca Belair. Chelsea Green, Blair Davenport, Michin. Piper Niven, Jade Cargill, Naomi, Tiffany Stratton and Elektra Lopez.
However, Jade Cargill was pulled from the tournament following a backstage attack and was replaced by NXT’s Lash Legend. In the tournament final at Saturday Night’s Main Event, Green defeated Michin to become the first-ever WWE Women’s United States Champion.
Current WWE Women’s US Champion
Zelina Vega, the current WWE Women’s US champion, is in her first reign. She won the WWE Women’s US championship by defeating Chelsea Green on the April 25, 2025 episode of SmackDown.
