SummerSlam is one of the most iconic pay-per-views of WWE
WWE SummerSlam is one of the biggest professional wrestling pay-per-views, hosted by WWE. It is the second biggest pay-per-view of the company and the biggest event of the summer in professional wrestling history.
The company has a great legacy with the event and the show featured some of the historical moments. As we head to the 37th edition of SummerSlam, here we take a look at the top five longest matches in SummerSlam history.
5. The Ultimate Warrior vs Randy Savage (28 Minutes)
At the 1992 SummerSlam, Randy Savage defended his WWF Championship against The Ultimate Warrior in a singles match. It is one of the main event matches of the show, where both took each other to the limit. During the match, Ric Flair and Mr. Perfect arrived at the ringside and caused huge trouble to both Savage and Warrior, as they attacked both the men.
In the final moments of the match, Ric Flair attacked Randy Savage with the chair on his leg, when the referee was down. Savage was unable to get into the ring and Ultimate Warrior won the match by countout. After the match, Flair and Perfect attacked Savage, but Ultimate Warrior made the save and they walked backstage together. The match lasted for a total of 28 minutes, making it one of the longest matches in SummerSlam history.
4. The Undertaker vs Bret Hart (28 Minutes 10 Seconds)
At the 1997 SummerSlam, The Undertaker defended his WWF Championship against Bret Hart in a singles match with Shawn Michaels as the special guest referee. The match carried a stipulation that if Bret Hart failed to win the title, he could no longer wrestle in the United States and if Michaels stood in favor of any of the two, he would also not be allowed to wrestle in the United States.
The match saw the interference of the Hart family, which distracted the referee. Michaels tried his best not to favor either of them. However, in the final moments, Hart spit in the face of Michaels, which pissed Michaels off. Michaels went on to hit Hart with the chair but accidentally hit The Undertaker and was forced to count Hart’s fall to end the match. The match lasted for a total of 28 minutes and 10 seconds, which makes it one of the longest matches in SummerSlam history.
3. Bret Hart vs Owen Hart (32 Minutes 22 Seconds)
At the 1994 SummerSlam, Bret Hart defended his WWF Championship against Owen Hart in a Steel Cage match. The Battle between the Hart brothers took each other to the limit in the process of having the WWF Championship. In the final moments of the match, Bret went through Owen’s leg to the cage bars and Bret escaped by escaping the cage. The match lasted for a total of 32 minutes and 22 seconds making it the longest match in SummerSlam history until 2010.
2. Team Nexus vs Team WWE (35 Minutes 5 Seconds)
At 2010 SummerSlam, Team WWE under John Cena’s leadership faced Team Nexus under Wade Barrett’s leadership in a 7-on-7 Elimination tag team match. Daniel Bryan was the surprise entrant for Team WWE. Team Nexus lost Darren Young and Michael Tarver back to back in the initial phase.
However, Nexus came back by eliminating John Morrison and R-Truth. Bret Hart eliminated himself by using a chair as a weapon on Skip Sheffield. Edge and Jericho then eliminated Sheffield and David Otunga. But both fell victim to Nexus as Heath Slater eliminated them and soon got eliminated by Bryan.
Daniel Bryan and John Cena were the final two for Team WWE, however Wade Barrett and Justin Gabriel were the final two for Team Nexus. Miz interfered during the match and attacked Bryan, helping Nexus eliminate him. Cena was caught in a two-on-one handicap situation, however, Cena pinned both Gabriel and made Barrett submit to STF to win the match. The match lasted for 35 minutes and 15 seconds, making it the longest match in SummerSlam history until 2023.
1. Tribal Combat Match (36 Minutes and 5 Seconds)
At the 2023 SummerSlam, Roman Reigns defended his Undisputed WWE Championship and his Tribal Chief status against his former Right Hand Man Jey Uso. The match took place in a no-hold-barred stipulation, where anything and everything is legal.
Roman and Jey took each other to the limit. Solo Sikoa interfered in favor of Roman, but Jey took him out of the context. Jey Uso came so close to winning the match, but his twin Jimmy Us returned and cost the match for Jey. This made Roman retain his title and retain his Tribal Chief status. The match lasted for 36 minutes and 5 seconds making it the longest match in the SummerSlam history.
