Rumblings of rap music icon Bad Bunny’s return to WWE have been rampant ahead of WrestleMania 42. Since his last in-ring appearance, Bunny has become a global trending topic across multiple industries.
He created waves after his halftime performance at Super Bowl LX recently, which led many fans to believe that the promotion might be planning to capitalize on the momentum and bring him back ahead of WrestleMania 42.
A recent report from Bryan Alvarez also mentioned that Bunny is likely to return to WWE sooner rather than later, following U.S. Senator from Arizona, Ruben Gallego’s tweet urging AEW President Tony Khan to bring Bunny to AEW
Bad Bunny’s WWE return might put the company under fire
In contrast to the earlier report, Dave Meltzer in the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter reported that the promotion might not be eager to bring Bunny back anytime soon, particularly after U.S. President Donald Trump publicly criticized his halftime show.
Meltzer further noted that the conservative group Turning Point USA staged a counter-event featuring Kid Rock, which turned Bunny’s performance into a broader political talking point.
While noting that WWE’s audience likely wouldn’t have a problem with Bunny, as long as he remains on Trump’s radar, the promotion may prefer to avoid doing anything that could be seen as provoking the president.
Notably, WWE CCO Paul ‘Triple H’ Levesque is a member of the Presidential Council on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition in the Trump Administration, while Linda McMahon is serving as the Secretary of Education, further highlighting WWE’s close ties to the Trump administration.
Should WWE bring back Bad Bunny?
The poor ticket sales for WrestleMania 42 have been a massive talking point among fans, and the promotion has been having meetings over boosting sales. The promotion is currently giving 25% off all WrestleMania 42 tickets through February 16.
Bad Bunny’s return is likely to generate massive buzz and boost ticket sales, although there’s a chance WWE could anger critics and even draw ire from former president Donald Trump due to the political backlash surrounding his Super Bowl LX performance.
The rap icon first appeared in WWE in 2021, and he also managed to win the 24/7 Championship from Akira Tozawa with the help of fellow Puerto Rican, Damian Priest. The two stars also teamed up to defeat the team of John Morrison & The Miz at WrestleMania 37.
He last wrestled for WWE in 2023 at Backlash in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Bunny defeated Damian Priest in a San Juan Street Fight. This was also his last appearance on WWE Television.
