The Intercontinental Championship carries a great legacy in WWE history
WWE Intercontinental Championship is one of the most prestigious professional wrestling championships, which is owned by WWE. The title was introduced in WWF in 1979 under the name WWF North American Heavyweight Championship, however, the name was changed to Intercontinental Championship later the same year, with a kayfabe explanation saying that it got combined with South American title. The title has witnessed a total of 89 different champions and are the top 5 oldest Intercontinental Champions in WWE history.
5. JBL
On the March 9, 2009, episode of Raw, John Bradshaw Layfield (JBL) challenged CM Punk and won the Intercontinental Championship for the first and only time. JBL was 42 years and 3 months old at that time, making him one of the oldest IC champions in WWE history. JBL held the title for 27 days and lost to Rey Mysterio at WrestleMania 25.
4. Bobby Lashley
On the March 11, 2019, episode of SmackDown, Bobby Lashley challenged Finn Balor for the Intercontinental Championship for the second time. Lashley was 42 years and 7 months old at that time, which makes him the fourth oldest IC Champion in WWE. Lashley held the title for 27 days and lost back to Finn Balor at WrestleMania 35.
3. Jeff Hardy
On the August 21, 2020 episode of SmackDown, Jeff Hardy defeated AJ Styles to become the Intercontinental Champion for the fifth time. Jeff was 42 years and 11 months old during that time, making him the third oldest WWE Superstar to win the IC title. Hardy held the title for 36 days and lost to Sami Zayn.
2. AJ Styles
On the June 8, 2020, episode of SmackDown, AJ Styles competed in a tournament final for the vacant Intercontinental Championship against Daniel Bryan and won to become the Intercontinental Champion for the first time. Styles was 43 years old at that time, making him the second oldest IC Champion in WWE history. Styles held the title for 74 days and lost to Jeff Hardy.
1. Ric Flair
At the 2005 Unforgiven pay-per-view, Ric Flair challenged Carlito and won the Intercontinental Championship for the first and only time in his WWE career. Flair was 56 years and 6 months old at the time, which makes him the oldest WWE Superstar to hold the IC title in history. Flair held the title for 155 days and lost to Shelton Benjamin.
