WWE surprised fans with Bray Wyatt’s return.

One of the greatest plot twists in WWE Hell in a Cell history was on October 26, 2014, when Bray Wyatt returned to WWE to surprise Dean Ambrose.

When Ambrose seemed poised to take revenge against his old friend, Seth Rollins of the former Shield faction, the lights in the ring suddenly went out, strange noises were heard, and Bray Wyatt walked out of the darkness. Bray Wyatt’s appearance led to Rollins winning the match and setting up a new feud.

The animosity between Seth Rollins and Dean Ambrose started after Rollins turned on The Shield in June 2014, making him a member of The Authority. This act of betrayal from Rollins turned their alliance into a feud that would pit them against each other.

At this point, Rollins became one of the most hated people, and Ambrose made sure to make him pay for betraying their brotherhood. The feud consisted of constant feuding and assaults by both wrestlers, as Ambrose would not let Rollins get away with what he did.

Eventually, WWE arranged for the two ex-members of The Shield to meet face-to-face inside a Hell in a Cell structure in the October 2014 pay-per-view. This highly anticipated match took place at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas.

The brutal Hell in a Cell match had a special surprise

The battle started with an amazing act as Ambrose and Rollins brought their match to the very top of the steel cage, all prior to starting the match. Jamie Noble and Joey Mercury, who were backing Rollins, were part of this crazy situation.

Ambrose and Rollins fell down from the walls of the cell and smashed right through the announce tables that were outside the ring. But none of them were willing to give up despite the pain inflicted on them. Ambrose even stopped Rollins from being taken out of the ring using a stretcher.

As the match began officially, Ambrose made use of weapons and attacked Rollins with his offensive style. He used both the kendo stick and screwdriver in order to do so.

Kane got help from Rollins, who was interfering from ringside with the use of a fire extinguisher on Ambrose. Nevertheless, Ambrose managed to recover and soon had the upper hand in the match. The turning point came when Ambrose trapped the head of Rollins between cinder blocks and got set to execute a Curb Stomp to get his revenge for betraying The Shield.

The lights went off in the stadium, and eerie noises filled the whole building. In the midst of smoke and darkness, a lantern came up in the center of the ring.

Bray Wyatt, who had not been seen on WWE TV screens since September other than video packages, made a dramatic return to the sport. Bray Wyatt attacked Ambrose, preventing him from beating Rollins and giving him Sister Abigail before knocking him unconscious.

After the interference, Rollins took advantage of it by pinning Ambrose to win the match. Afterwards, Bray Wyatt stood over Ambrose, stretching his hands out.

Ambrose losing not only deprived him of victory but opened the way for a brand new feud where Wyatt took the role of yet another villain on Ambrose’s way.

For Rollins, the result of the match gave him another chance to avoid a rivalry that constantly put him in trouble. For Ambrose, it was additionally disappointing since he seemed to be close to getting his revenge on Rollins.

Overall, the main event of Hell in a Cell 2014 stands out in memories as a very exciting and entertaining match that demonstrated the heat of the rivalry between the two opponents as well as gave Bray Wyatt a significant comeback.

12 years later, everything has changed dramatically. Seth Rollins is still a WWE performer, yet his health status has become questionable since he stated he would come back in time. Dean Ambrose is now one of AEW’s biggest stars, using the name Jon Moxley, and has an active contract in the company until 2027. Tragically, Bray Wyatt passed away on August 24, 2023, at the age of 36.
