The Franchise Player is coming back, but not everyone is celebrating.

Four months after his emotional retirement match against Gunther at Saturday Night’s Main Event in Washington, D.C., John Cena is already heading back to WWE.

The sixteen-time world champion announced on March 30 via a social media video that he will return to host WrestleMania 42 on April 18 and 19 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.

He will not be wrestling, but he will be in the building and very much part of the show. The reason behind WWE’s decision, however, is far less celebratory than the announcement itself.

Fightful Select has reported that the real driving force behind Cena’s return is the promotion’s concern over sluggish ticket sales for WrestleMania 42.

According to WrestleTix, just over 37,000 tickets have been sold for each of the two nights, compared to a crowd of approximately 60,000 on both nights of WrestleMania 41 at the same venue last year.

That is a gap of roughly 10,000 seats per night, and internal meetings were reportedly held in Stamford, Connecticut, to address the shortfall. WWE even adjusted pricing on some seats in an attempt to stimulate sales, though it has reportedly been unwilling to make sweeping price cuts across the board.

Why are WrestleMania 42 ticket sales struggling?

There is no single reason, but several factors have compounded to create the problem. WrestleMania 42 is the second consecutive year WWE has run the event at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, and some fans are simply not willing to pay the same premium twice in the same building.

The cheapest available ticket is reportedly priced at $254 USD, which is now being sold at $177 USD, pricing out a significant portion of the fanbase that might otherwise attend.

Beyond pricing, the card itself was seen as lacking a clear must-see matchup in the months leading up to the event. WrestleMania 41 benefited enormously from the dual draws of John Cena’s retirement match in the main event and widespread speculation about The Rock making a surprise appearance.

Neither of those elements exists this year, and several high-profile names, including Seth Rollins, Bron Breakker, and Bianca Belair, are all sidelined with injuries and will miss the event entirely.

The Wrestling Observer Newsletter noted that ticket sales are down approximately 18 percent compared to the same period last year, and that WWE creative was significantly uncertain about the shape of the card in the lead-up to the Royal Rumble.

Will John Cena’s return actually help?

The honest answer is: probably, but not completely. Fightful Select confirmed that the promotion will heavily promote Cena’s WrestleMania hosting role across all of its programming, including NXT, SmackDown, and Raw, in the hope that the announcement translates into a meaningful uptick in last-minute ticket purchases.

Cena himself framed the announcement with characteristic wit, posting the video from the set of his upcoming Netflix film One Attempt Remaining alongside Jennifer Garner, joking that Hollywood is close enough to Las Vegas that the road to WrestleMania runs right past his doorstep.

There is also growing speculation about whether Cena’s presence as host could lead to an in-ring moment. WWE has historically used the host role as a flexible vehicle, allowing legends to interact with current talent in ways that can turn physical without being advertised as a match.

Cena himself has said he has “cracked the code” on a post-retirement role within the promotion, which suggests his Las Vegas appearance may be more than just an introduction and a microphone.

Why is John Cena returning to WWE at WrestleMania 42?

John Cena is returning to host WrestleMania 42 on April 18 and 19 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. Per Fightful Select, the primary reason for the return just four months after his December 2025 retirement is to boost lagging ticket sales, which are reportedly around 10,000 per night below where they were at the same point ahead of WrestleMania 41.

Will John Cena compete in a match at WrestleMania 42?

John Cena has stated he is not returning to wrestle, and his role at WrestleMania 42 is officially listed as host. However, the promotion has historically used the host role as a way to get legends involved in physical segments without formally advertising a match. Cena’s presence in the building across both nights leaves the door open for an unannounced in-ring moment, but nothing has been confirmed by WWE.
