WWE SmackDown will witness further buildup towards Backlash
WWE SmackDown is set to deliver another action-packed episode this Friday, May 2, 2025, as the blue brand continues to build momentum toward the upcoming Backlash Premium Live Event.
Major names like John Cena, Randy Orton, Naomi, Jade Cargill, and the four contenders for the United States Championship are scheduled to appear and fans are already expecting a night full of drama, intense rivalries, and big moments.
However, WWE is no stranger to jaw-dropping surprises. Whether it’s a shocking return, an unexpected heel turn, or a major match announcement, here are three surprises we could witness this week on SmackDown.
3. Nick Aldis announces Tiffany Stratton vs Nia Jax for Backlash
Tiffany Stratton’s WWE Women’s Championship reign has been turbulent ever since she cashed in on Nia Jax. Last week’s match between Stratton and Jade Cargill was derailed by Naomi, and Jax added fuel to the fire by taking out the champion.
With tensions boiling, don’t be surprised if SmackDown GM Nick Aldis makes the match official for Backlash. Stratton vs. Jax has all the makings of a high-stakes, high-impact title bout and the announcement would be a fitting surprise to cap off Friday night.

2. R-Truth turns heel and targets Randy Orton
Last week’s fiery verbal exchange between John Cena and Randy Orton ended with Cena eating yet another RKO, his second in as many weeks. In a backstage segment that followed, R-Truth told Cena he’d always be a fan. But what if that fanboy admiration takes a dark turn?
A heel turn from R-Truth, with an attack on Orton in defense of Cena, would be wildly unexpected. While Truth is beloved for his comedic antics, a sudden alignment with Cena as a serious character, even briefly, would add an intriguing twist to their ongoing feud.
1. Alexa Bliss returns as the true leader of The Wyatt Sicks
Perhaps the biggest potential shocker would be the return of Alexa Bliss this time as the true leader of The Wyatt Sicks. The mysterious group took WWE by storm last year, only for their momentum to stall due to Bo Dallas’ injury.
Fans have been left wondering what’s next for the stable, and Bliss, who made her return at the Royal Rumble, could be the missing piece. With deep ties to the late Bray Wyatt, her stepping in as the mastermind behind the group would inject new life into the faction. It’s a surprise that could instantly reignite fan interest and set the stage for a compelling new chapter on SmackDown.
