WWE Hall of Famer claims Vince McMahon changed his on-screen role after learning he wanted to leave.

The Great Khali has offered a surprising explanation for one of the biggest changes in his WWE career, claiming Vince McMahon intentionally transformed him from an unstoppable monster into a comedy character after learning he wanted to leave the company.

Speaking on Insight with Chris Van Vliet, the WWE Hall of Famer reflected on his run in the Stamford-based promotion and explained why his intimidating persona eventually gave way to the comedic “Punjabi Playboy” character.

According to Khali, the shift had nothing to do with creative direction alone. Instead, he believes it came after WWE learned he was considering exploring opportunities outside the company.

The Great Khali believes Vince McMahon changed his character as punishment

During the interview, Khali recalled how he was initially presented as one of WWE’s most dominant heels, feuding with stars such as The Undertaker, Rey Mysterio and Batista.

However, after expressing interest in leaving WWE, Khali claimed the then-Chairman Vince McMahon made a dramatic creative decision.

“After WWE finds out Khali wants to leave, so then he made me a comedy wrestler, because he wants to kill my character. When I start wrestling in WWE, all of India watches wrestling.

Everyone, kids, women, men, young, and old. So he’s thinking he wants to leave, so he made me a comedy wrestler.”

The transformation surprised many fans, as Khali had spent years being portrayed as an unstoppable giant before suddenly becoming part of comedic storylines.

Although the “Punjabi Playboy” character generated memorable television moments, it marked a significant departure from the fearsome monster who debuted by attacking The Undertaker in 2006.

Khali also reflected on one of WWE’s most controversial storylines involving Rey Mysterio. He recalled receiving heavy backlash from fans after the infamous angle in which he crushed Mysterio’s skull with his vice grip.

According to Khali, some fans became so emotionally invested in the storyline that they confronted him in a parking lot after the segment aired.

The Great Khali confirms his wrestling career is over

Elsewhere in the interview, Khali confirmed that his in-ring career has officially come to an end.

“Yeah, I retired. Never know but I don’t want to go. Maybe WWE asking, ‘Will you come one day?’ then I can go. But just one, two day… not full time. Never. I because my bad knee so I can’t go full time.”

The former World Heavyweight Champion explained that an upcoming knee replacement surgery makes a full-time return impossible, although he remains open to making a brief WWE appearance if the company ever calls.

Khali debuted in WWE in 2006 and quickly established himself as one of the promotion’s most dominant attractions. Standing 7-foot-1 and weighing 347 pounds, he entered immediately into a rivalry with The Undertaker before capturing the World Heavyweight Championship in 2007.

Following his departure from WWE in 2014, Khali made occasional appearances for the company and was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2021.

His final WWE match came in the 50-Man Greatest Royal Rumble in 2018, closing the chapter on a career that made him one of the most recognizable Indian superstars in professional wrestling history.

Why did The Great Khali say Vince McMahon changed his WWE character?

Khali claimed Vince McMahon turned him into a comedy character after learning he wanted to leave WWE, believing it was done to “kill” his monster persona.

Has The Great Khali officially retired from wrestling?

Yes, Khali confirmed he has retired due to ongoing knee problems and an upcoming knee replacement surgery, although he remains open to making occasional WWE appearances.
