The Rock has been referred to by many nicknames by fans all across the wrestling world.
The Rock is the epitome of one of the biggest celebrities in the world. The rise of Rocky and Ata Johnson’s son began in the wrestling world following his failed stint as a football player. Despite his disastrous start, he defied all odds and channelized his charisma, in-ring acumen and exceptional personality to become one of the biggest WWE superstars of all time. Not only that, he expanded his horizons further and became the highest-paid actors in Hollywood.
Speaking of his journey to reach the top of the WWE food chain, The Rock carved out a strong and magnetic persona that earned him a lot of nicknames. In fact, after his regular appearances on WWE television programming in 2024, he added another powerful name to his list of nicknames. Here are all the nicknames of The Rock’s explained:
The Great One
After his failed stint as the third-generation athlete, Rocky Maivia, The Rock decided to make a change in his entire character presentation. He aligned himself with The Nation of Domination and shortened his name to “The Rock”, claiming himself to be greater than everybody else in WWE. This led to him coining the name “The Great One”, which became highly synonymous with him.
The People’s Champion
As the name mentions, The Rock did not christen himself as “The People’s Champion”; he earned that nickname. Not many WWE superstars can captivate, as The Rock himself says, “The Millions and Millions of fans” like he does. The Rock’s entire presentation and connection with the fans, whether in live arenas or on social media, for years, deservingly made him the champion of the people.
The Most Electrifying Man in Sports Entertainment
One of the biggest reasons for The Rock that helped him succeed as a megastar in WWE was his ability to deliver on the microphone. In wrestling terminology, it is called cutting a promo, and The Rock was a master of it.
His charisma on the mic, to mock opponents, captivate the audience, and verbally destroy his foes earned him the moniker of “The Most Electrifying Man in Sports Entertainment.” In fact, Jerry Lawler and other WWE commentators said the moniker each time The Rock delivered his finisher, the People’s Elbow.
Rocky
As mentioned, The Rock started in WWE under the ring name “Rocky Maivia.” This was a name made from his father, Rocky Johnson and his grandfather, “High Chief” Peter Maivia’s names. While he shortened his name to The Rock sometime after his debut, the fans always chanted for him as “Rocky”, and he himself used it to refer to him on numerous occasions.
The Brahma Bull
The Rock has many nicknames based on his onscreen personality. However, this one name was derived from a physical aspect of his persona. The Rock had a Brahma Bull tattoo on his right arm, which ultimately became his nickname and even his insignia in WWE, used on his wrestling trunks, entrance video, and even a custom WWE title made, which never made it to WWE television.
The Final Boss
After he returned to WWE in 2024, he became a part of Roman Reigns’ rivalry with Cody Rhodes on the road to WrestleMania XL. He joined Roman Reigns‘s Bloodline, turning heel for the first time since 2004.
Moreover, he abandoned his beloved ‘People’s Champion’ persona and adopted a new gimmick called ‘The Final Boss’. This was an amalgamation of his current persona and heel personality, popularly known as Hollywood Rock, and the name also signified his status as a member of the TKO board.
