Mark Shapiro comments on TKO’s influence.

TKO President Mark Shapiro visited the University of Alabama before WrestleMania 42 in Las Vegas last weekend. The Chief Operating Officer & President took part in a Q&A session at the University.

During the session, a student asked him about the reaction to TKO’s perceived influence on creative, pointing to the involvement of figures like Pat McAfee, Jelly Roll, IShowSpeed, and influencer-turned-WWE star Logan Paul. The interaction was recorded by a Reddit user.

Responding to the question, Shapiro claimed that TKO has full creative control, and they’re responsible for the good or bad.

Shapiro drew a clear distinction between the current scenario and the Vince McMahon era, explaining that once WWE became a publicly traded company and later merged with UFC to create TKO Group Holdings (a publicly traded company on NSE), its inner workings became far more open and accountable.

He also emphasised WWE’s immense growth in every way, which has been fueled in large part by lucrative media deals, like Raw shifting to Netflix, SmackDown staying on USA Network, and WWE NXT relocating to The CW. At the same time, premium live events (PLEs) have increasingly been distributed via ESPN, further expanding the company’s reach.

“First of all, it has complete control, so we’re responsible, good or bad, fact or fiction...

What I will tell you is WWE is growing every way, WWE has grown in every way… it’s grown in audience, social, stars, clicks, views… it’s really exploding. It’s really exploded… As far as the stars part of it, I don’t think that’s true.”

Addressing the fan criticism regarding the heavy celebrity involvement, Shapiro referenced Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, highlighting the crossover appeal, while also noting that celebrity involvement isn’t a new thing in pro-wrestling; it’s just being done at a larger scale.

He also rationalized the current product, stating that they have spent a lot of money to market the brand, which might bring fans in, but also noted that not every fan will support the direction.

“The Rock is the biggest star on the planet, right? I mean he actually is… He was a wrestler for WWE for years before he ever became a Jumanji star...

Having Hollywood tie-ins and celebs and stars; Logan Paul, and Pat McAfee, and Mark Wahlberg shows up and does his thing, or Tyrese Haliburton… That’s not new, it’s just on a larger stage.

We’re spending a lot more money to market the brand, market the content. And when you do that you’re gonna win some folks over, but you’re also going to chase some folks away.”

What did the TKO President say about fans’ criticism regarding heavy celebrity involvement?
