Randy Orton turned heel and attacked Cody Rhodes on SmackDown.

The March 13 episode of WWE SmackDown saw a major shocker in the last segment. After Cody Rhodes and Randy Orton signed the contract for their World title match at WrestleMania 42, The Viper viciously attacked him and left him lying covered in his own blood.

With such a major move pulled by WWE before WrestleMania, here are five possible reasons for a Randy Orton heel turn that happened.

5. Randy Orton has been a monster heel before

The 2009 version of Randy Orton is known to be one of the most vicious and dangerous WWE superstars. He was known to take out top names like Batista, Triple H, and even then-Chairman Vince McMahon.

Orton going back to those roots could be the intriguing direction WWE needs to build excitement for WrestleMania 42.

4. WWE still wants to push Cody Rhodes as babyface

Cody Rhodes has been positioned as WWE’s top babyface since his return in 2022, similar to John Cena in his prime.

WWE has yet to find a replacement for his role in this era, so until that happens, they might continue with Rhodes as a babyface, which could be a reason Randy Orton turned heel on the road to WrestleMania.

3. Get cheers for Cody Rhodes

Since the last few months, the WWE Universe has been heavily booing Cody Rhodes. Even when he defeated Drew McIntyre to win the Undisputed WWE title on SmackDown, it got a record number of dislikes on social media. So, turning Randy Orton heel could be their attempt to get cheers back in The American Nightmare’s direction.

WWE making Randy Orton a monster heel could have happened to set up another big shocker at WrestleMania 42. This could see Orton dethrone Rhodes at The Show of Shows.

Just when Orton would offer to bury the hatchet, Cody Rhodes would finally embrace the hate and cement himself as the top heel going forward.

1. Orton as heel champion has worked

Randy Orton has had major runs as a heel World Champion in WWE over the years. It has always been a peak storyline for WWE, and they might want to garner the same kind of attention with his current heel turn on the road to WrestleMania 42 this year.
