Their last singles match took place on July 11, 2013, on WWE NXT. At the time, Lee was the reigning Divas Champion, while Bayley was an up-and-coming talent beginning to make a name for herself in the developmental brand.
Although Bayley was still early in her career, the match gave fans a glimpse of the performer who would later become one of WWE’s most decorated women’s champions.
AJ Lee retained in their first encounter
During the bout, The Role Model showed resilience and determination against the experienced champion. Lee, however, controlled key moments of the match with her veteran instincts and technical offense.
Despite The Role Model’s spirited effort, AJ ultimately secured the victory, retaining the Divas Championship. While it was a loss for Bayley, the match helped establish her potential as a future star within WWE.
The rivalry reignites on WWE RAW next week
More than ten years later, the two stars are set to meet again under very different circumstances. On the March 9 edition of RAW, The Role Model won a six-woman Gauntlet Match to become the number one contender for the Women’s Intercontinental Championship.
That victory set up a championship showdown against Lee on next week’s episode of RAW. The situation has even created a humorous dilemma for CM Punk.
Punk, who is married to Lee and also close friends with Bayley, reacted on Instagram after seeing the match graphics.
“Uuuh. What am I supposed to do here?!?” Punk wrote.
Lee reposted the message with a playful response.
“You’re supposed to embrace the throuple,” she joked.
Lee has also previously named Bayley as one of her dream opponents. In an interview with ESPN, she explained that while they shared the ring years ago, she wanted to see how a match between them would play out now that both women are established stars.
With the Women’s Intercontinental Championship on the line, their long-awaited rematch could finally answer that question.
