The WWE Ladder Match returns to center stage at SummerSlam 2026, where an interim WWE Women’s Champion will be crowned following Rhea Ripley’s injury. Five of WWE’s top stars will battle in a high-risk contest that rewards strategy, resilience, and fearlessness as much as athletic ability.
Tiffany Stratton became the first Superstar to qualify after defeating Jacy Jayne on the July 17 edition of SmackDown. Later that night, Jade Cargill secured her place by defeating Nia Jax via disqualification after Charlotte Flair got involved.
The field continued to take shape a week later when Chelsea Green earned her spot with a victory over Kiana James. Charlotte Flair then qualified after Cargill attacked Jax during their match, resulting in another disqualification finish.
The final spot in the match is secured by Lash Legend, who defeated Giulia on the go-home show of SmackDown.
What are the rules of a WWE Ladder Match?
Unlike traditional WWE matches, a Ladder Match cannot be won by pinfall, submission, count-out, or disqualification. Instead, the objective is to climb a ladder and retrieve the championship, contract, or prize suspended above the ring.
Competitors are free to use ladders as legal weapons throughout the contest, making the match one of WWE’s most physically demanding stipulations. The winner is simply the first Superstar to successfully climb the ladder and unhook the prize.
Because there are no pinfalls or submissions, every participant remains in contention until someone reaches the top of the ladder. This creates dramatic momentum swings, with competitors often stopping opponents at the final moment before victory.
The history and evolution of WWE Ladder Matches
Although many fans associate Ladder Matches with Razor Ramon and Shawn Michaels at WrestleMania 10, the concept was first introduced to WWE by Bret Hart. Hart explained in his autobiography that the stipulation originated in his father Stu Hart’s Stampede Wrestling promotion before he convinced Vince McMahon to bring it to WWE.
A non-televised Ladder Match between Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels ultimately persuaded McMahon that the concept could work. The WrestleMania 10 classic between Razor Ramon and Michaels then established the match as one of WWE’s signature attractions.
During the 1990s, Ladder Matches became closely linked with the Intercontinental Championship. Classics such as Shawn Michaels vs. Razor Ramon at SummerSlam 1995 and Triple H vs. The Rock at SummerSlam 1998 helped cement the match’s reputation for delivering unforgettable action.
The Attitude Era expanded the concept further with tag team Ladder Matches featuring The Hardy Boyz, Edge & Christian, and The Dudley Boyz. Their groundbreaking encounters eventually evolved into the legendary TLC (Tables, Ladders and Chairs) Matches, where tables and chairs became legal alongside ladders.
The format continued evolving with the introduction of Money in the Bank in 2005.
