What is an unsanctioned match in WWE?

Sami Zayn & Kevin Owens will face each other in an unsanctioned match
During the most recent episode of WWE RAW on Netflix, Adam Pearce announced an unsanctioned match for Elimination Chamber 2025. Sami Zayn spoke on television, expressing his outrage and desire for vengeance against Kevin Owens for his acts. However, the RAW General Manager addressed Sami, informing him that he was not medically fit, meaning that the bout could not be made official.
In return, the Honorary Uce tried everything possible to persuade Pearce to authorize the match. This eventually led to the authority figure certifying Sami vs KO in the upcoming PLE. However, Adam Pearce stated that this would be an unsanctioned WWE bout.
Veteran professional wrestling fans are undoubtedly familiar with this stipulation, but there is still some misconception about what an unsanctioned match entails in WWE.
Essentially, it means that the company accepts no responsibility or accountability for the match, despite being in the squared circle. Such bouts are frequently made official when stars desire to rip one other apart, and WWE is concerned about how things will play out.
As a result, whatever occurs between Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens in an unsanctioned match, Triple H and the team will not be held responsible. Instead, both stars bear full responsibility.
With no regulations in place, everything is possible. This makes their battle much more exciting. Of course, this condition is part of a plot element designed to add heat to the already tense battle. Furthermore, as Adam Pearce pointed out, if KO whips Sami by placing a chair around his neck or doing anything similarly rough, he will not intervene.
This strongly hints that spectators will be treated to a storm at the next PLE, when Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens fight in an unsanctioned match.
