What is the title The Rock is carrying around in WWE?

The Rock is one of the greatest professional wrestlers of all time, who has a great legacy in the industry. Rock is known for his time in the late 90s and early 2000s when he had a great run in the company. The People Champ had a number of sporadic appearances and some occasional returns.

However, the returning storyline in 2024 is more compelling than his past returns. Rock adapted the “Heel” Final Boss gimmick and is having a great run. Rock recently made his return at Bad Blood with a championship on his shoulder, which he previously held since WrestleMania weekend. So what title is Rock holding in WWE and here is a quick history of the championship. 

People’s Championship / Brahma Bull Belt

The title that The Rock has been holding currently is the People’s Championship, which Muhammad Ali’s wife, Lonnie Ali presented him at the 2024 WWE Hall of Fame, while Ali was inducted into the Hall of Fame. The belt is a legacy passed down from Muhammad Ali to The Rock.

Lonnie Ali during the induction ceremony said that the fans called Muhammad Ali as the people’s champ. In 1998, a young wrestler asked for permission to use the people’s champion out of deep respect and homage to Ali’s legacy. Ali was pleased and honored to fulfill Rock’s request and she fulfilled Ali’s words by presenting Rock with the People’s Championship.

It is not the first time a customized title has been designed for Rock. The history behind the championship has a long history since the late 1990s. WWE first made a customized championship for Rock back in 1999, with the “Brahma Bull belt” as a counter title for Stone Cold Steve Austin’s “Smoking Skull belt” However, the title didn’t come to light on TV, as the title got lost in the mail and the plans got scrapped. Stephanie McMahon revealed the history of the WWE Archive in an exclusive video on Entertainment Tonight.

Although the People’s Champion didn’t get the customized title then, he now holds the “People’s Championship” with pride and honor, with the endorsement from the legendary Muhammad Ali Family.
