The Second City Saint wants to recapture the World title!

‘The Second City Saint’ CM Punk made his return after almost a decade during the final moments of Survivor Series 2023. Since his return, Punk has been part of iconic feuds, matches, and on-mic segments, showing why WWE fans chanted his name despite his long absence.

However, Punk has fallen short when it comes to recapturing the World title in the WWE. Despite his goal of recapturing the title, Punk has still been unable to do so. He will get another shot at recapturing the title at SummerSlam after winning the gauntlet match last week on Raw.

Ahead of his title clash against Gunther at SummerSlam 2025, let us take a look at the last time Punk competed for the World title in WWE.

CM Punk battled John Cena in the main event of WWE Night of Champions 2025

Before his upcoming title match, the Second City Saint challenged the current Undisputed WWE Champion John Cena for the title in the main event of Night of Champions, which took place on June 28 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

However, Punk’s dreams of holding the title once again was crushed by his longtime rival Seth Rollins, who along with his henchmen Bronson Reed and Bron Breakker, attacked Punk. Rollins tried to cash in the Money in the Bank contract during the attack but was thwarted by Cena.

The interference helped Cena, who ultimately capitalized on Rollins landing the stomp and pinned Punk to retain the title. This obviously wasn’t the first time Rollins crushed Punk’s title dreams, but that story if likely for another day.

Apart from this, Punk has battled Gunther for the World Heavyweight title, but all of the matches were during WWE Holiday Tour. The last time Punk held a World title in the WWE was in 2013, before his exit.

The Second City Saint’s last World title match before the Night of Champions one was during the 2013 edition of Elimination Chamber, where he suffered defeat at the hands of The Rock.

This was a rematch from Royal Rumble 2013, where Rock defeated Punk to end his second WWE Heavyweight title (Undisputed WWE Championship) reign at 434 days.

The Second City Saint will now compete in his second title match since his return at SummerSlam, as he looks to end the streak and hold the WWE World Title for the first time in fifteen years.

When did CM Punk last hold the WWE World title?

CM Punk’s last WWE World title reign ended during the 2013 edition of Royal Rumble. He has been unable to recapture the World title since.

Who is CM Punk booked against for SummerSlam 2025?

CM Punk will battle Gunther for the World Heavyweight Championship at the 2025 edition of SummerSlam.

When and where will SummerSlam 2025 take place?

The 2025 edition of SummerSlam is scheduled to take place as a two-night event on August 2 & 3, 2025. It will emanate live from the MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, U.S.A.
