John Cena’s teased announcement was the talk of the town before Backlash.
The 17-time WWE World Champion John Cena made his return at the 2026 edition of Backlash. WWE Backlash 2026 is currently emanating live from the Benchmark International Arena in Tampa, Florida. Seth Rollins vs Bron Breakker kicked off the show, with Breakker picking up the win.
This marked Cena’s first appearance since WrestleMania 42 last month in Las Vegas, where he returned to host the show. For his appearance at Backlash, Cena teased a massive announcement, stating, “shake the very foundation of WWE, from its fans to its superstars, to Champions, down to its rookies…”
The announcement sparked major intrigue from WWE fans who started speculating on what the announcement might be, and now, in his appearance at Backlash before the main event, Cena has revealed it all after the co-main event at the PLE.

Cena soaked in all the love from the Tampa crowd and thanked them for the cheers and chants. The 17-time World Champion recapped his retirement, which brought out “ONE MORE MATCH” chants. Cena acknowledged the chants and said he couldn’t be happier about his retirement, as it turned into an evening of opportunity.
Cena then revealed his announcement which was a ‘John Cena Classic’.
The best of today competing with the best of tomorrow, in the hopes of being crowned a Champion.
Cena added that the brand new event and the debut of a brand new Championship in WWE, this title and event, he’s personally putting his name on, and is striving for a certain level of excellence. He also added that the WWE Universe’s voice will be heard louder than ever as the fans will vote to crown the Champion of the ‘John Cena classic’.
Every participant who qualifies may not win the match, but the fans can still crown them Champion. Cena also promised to give the fans everything he has and doesn’t want to do it just for one, two, or three, as the Sky is the limit. He then hyped the fans for the main event of Backlash.
