The two stars collided in an unsanctioned match at the PLE
One of the most personal and violent encounters in WWE history took place at Elimination Chamber 2025, as Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn waged war in an Unsanctioned Match on March 1 at the Rogers Center in Toronto.
With the WWE logos blacked out and the presentation stripped down, this was far from a traditional WWE match, it was a fight fueled by years of history and betrayal. During the match, the two former friends attack each other using hockey sticks, barbed steel chair, tables, and more.
However, after a vicious back and forth, Owens landed two back to back pop up powerbomb’s on the edge of the ring to secure the victory in front of the hometown crowd in Canada. While KO wanted to inflict more punishment after the match, Sami was saved by KO’s old friend, Randy Orton.
Orton made his surprising return after the match and saved Zayn from further punishment, Randy was himself the victim of a package piledriver from Owens in November 2024, that caused an injury forcing him out of action.
Sami Zayn has suffered multiple injuries and will be out of action indefinitely
Zayn gave it all in the match and despite suffering a beatdown kept fighting, however, there’s a limit one’s body can take. During the 03/03 episode of Monday Night Raw, Michael Cole on commentary provided an update on Zayn after the match.
According to Cole, Sami Zayn sustained multiple injuries during the match, including neck injuries, as well as nerve and spinal issues, and will be out of action indefinitely.
First and foremost, what’s next for Zayn is to rest, take time off, and recover from his injuries. His neck was already compromised going into the match due to the package piledriver that KO delivered when he ambushed Sami after the Royal Rumble PLE.
After recovering from his injuries, Zayn should return at full strength and challenge KO for another match, as the win has only inflated his ego and fueled his delusions. With the return of Randy Orton, Zayn has a potential backup, and he can join forces with Orton to take down Owens.
Zayn needs to silence the doubters by defeating Owens cleanly, and then he could advance his storyline and refocus his attention on chasing the titles once again.
