‘The American Nightmare’ will face Kevin Owens in a ladder match
‘The American Nightmare’ Cody Rhodes is set to defend the Undisputed WWE title in a rematch against his former friend Kevin Owens at the Royal Rumble 2025 PLE which will emanate from the Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Indiana on February 1.
The two stars will lock horns in a ladder match where the Undisputed title and the Winged Eagle title will be on the line. Owens stole the Winged Eagle title which was given “on loan” by WWE CCO Triple H to Rhodes. Rhodes previously successfully defended his title against Owens on the December 14 edition of SNME.
However, Owens launched an attack following the loss and stole the title, claiming that he was the ‘real’ champion. The two stars collided again when Cody made his return on the 12/27/24 episode of SmackDown and confronted Owens.
This confrontation led to a ladder match announcement between the two for the title at the Royal Rumble PLE. Following the match announcement, the two stars have started fighting at the sight of each other and fans are eagerly waiting for them to get in the squared ring on February 1.

Cody Rhodes last competed in a ladder match in AEW
‘The American Nightmare’ made his WWE return in 2022 after parting ways with All Elite Wrestling (AEW), a company that he helped build. Since returning to the Stamford-based promotion Rhodes has become the company’s top baby face.
However, the ladder match against Owens will be the first ladder match of Cody’s career following his return in 2022. The last time Rhodes competed in a ladder match was way back in early 2022 while he was still with AEW.
‘The American Nightmare’ locked horns with Sammy Guevara in a ladder match for the TNT Championship on the January 26, 2022 show of AEW Dynamite Beach Break. Guevara defeated Rhodes to become the undisputed AEW TNT Champion. This was also Cody’s last match in the promotion, as he left AEW and returned to WWE.
Rhodes’ last ladder match in the Stamdford-based promotion came at WrestleMania 32 where he competed as Stardust in the Intercontinental Title Seven Way Ladder match alongside Zack Ryder, Dolph Ziggler, Kevin Owens (c), Sami Zayn, Sin Cara, Stardust, and The Miz.
