From best friends to bitter rivals, these two stars have seen it all

The friendship between ‘The American Nightmare’ Cody Rhodes and ‘The Prizefighter’ Kevin Owens was once one of the most genuine and heartfelt bonds in WWE. However, as the saying goes good things don’t last long their friendship too didn’t stand the test of time and the two stars are now engaged in a brutal feud.

The feud that kicked off at Bad Blood 2024 PLE, when Rhodes teamed up with Roman Reigns to battle the Bloodline will now culminate at the Royal Rumble 2025 PLE. The two stars will face each other in a ladder match at the first PLE of this year.

Rhodes defended his title against Owens on the December 14, 2024, edition of Saturday Night’s Main Event. After the loss, Owens attacked Cody and delivered a controversial package piledriver, resulting in a severe neck injury to Rhodes. KO also stole the Winged Eagle title after the attack, the title was given on loan by WWE CCO Triple H to Rhodes.

The attack only made the animosity deeper as the American Nightmare engaged in a war of words with Owens in his return last month at 12/27 SmackDown. Rhodes in his return floated the idea of a match between the two at Royal Rumble PLE.

In the weeks that followed, Rhodes and Owens clashed repeatedly, turning Friday Night SmackDown into complete chaos with their relentless brawls. The bad blood between the two former friends has reached its boiling point, with the stars attacking each other on sight.

The Undisputed WWE title and the Winged Eagle title were on the line for their clash on February 1 at the Lucas Oil Stadium.

The two former friends have fought each other a total of 23 times in the Stamford-based promotion, which includes live shows. However, when it comes to telecasted singles matches Rhodes and Owens have only fought each other three times.

For the majority of their careers, the two stars have fought alongside each other teaming up to battle different opponents. Except for a dark match and two title clashes involving multiple stars the two former friends didn’t meet in a singles competition until 2022.

The first singles clash between Rhodes and Ownes came in the April 18, 2022 episode of Monday Night Raw which aired from the KeyBank Center in Buffalo, New York, USA. The American Nightmare picked up the win in the clash via countout.

The second meeting between Rhodes and Owens came after the American Nightmare captured the Undisputed WWE title by defeating Roman Reigns. The American Nightmare defended the title against Ownes at the Bash in Berlin 2024 PLE.

The two stars locked horns in the Uber Arena in Berlin, Deutschland, where Rhodes picked up the win despite Owens’ best attempts. This was also the last civil match between the two stars as two months after the PLE the feud began.

Cody Rhodes met Kevin Owens for the third time in WWE at the December 14, 2024 edition of Saturday Night’s Main Event in a singles match for the Undisputed WWE title. As mentioned above, Rhodes picked up the win in the clash at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Uniondale, New York.

The fourth meeting between the two stars took place on February 1 at the Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Indiana. The Undisputed title along with the Winged Eagle title was up for grabs in the fourth clash. While Rhodes looked to defend the title and keep his undefeated streak intact, Owens wanted to inflict damage and prove that he was the ‘true’ WWE Champion.

The American Nightmare defeated Owens in their fourth meeting as he landed an Alabama Slam right onto the ladder, which snapped upon impact. Rhodes followed to climb the ladder and grab both the title while Owens laid motionless ringside.
