CM Punk is scheduled to face Seth Rollins
‘The Second City Saint’ CM Punk made his return back to the WWE after eight years of absence at last year’s Survivor Series: WarGames PLE. Punk was among the top stars of the pro wrestling world when he decided to retire.
Since making his main roster debut in 2006, The Second City Saint quickly rose to prominence featuring in major storylines and matches. CM Punk was drafted to Monday Night Raw in June 2008 where on his first appearance he cashed in his MITB contract to bag the World Heavyweight title.
The Second City Saint’s first title reign lasted 69 days, after losing the title he teamed up with Kofi Kingston to win the World Tag Team Championship. He has also held the Intercontinental Championship once in his WWE career.
Punk captured the World Heavyweight champion twice after his initial title reign. However, his second title reign as the Undisputed WWE Champion is one of the most dominant reigns of his career. His second Undisputed title reign lasted 434 days which he defended the title a total of 20 times.
The Second City Saint title reign ended when he was defeated by The Rock at Royal Rumble 2013 PLE which was held at the US Airways Center in Phoenix, Arizona, USA. After losing his title, Punk competed on both the brands as well as PLEs.
His WWE career ended abruptly when he decided to retire from pro wrestling, a move that shocked many fans. Punk left the promotion and decided to retire due to multiple reasons including the build-up of creative frustrations, not getting the opportunity to main event a WrestleMania, and multiple injuries.
After six years of absence from the pro wrestling world the Second City Saint returned back to action and joined All Elite Wrestling (AEW). Punk was later released from the promotion after a backstage brawl with AEW wrestler Jack Perry.
Following his AEW exit, The Second City Saint finally returned home when he walked out through the entrance ramp in front of his hometown crowd in Chicago at Survivor Series 2023 PLE.
Since his return, Punk has competed in the 2024 Royal Rumble where he tore his right triceps forcing him out of action ahead of the WrestleMania PLE. The Chicago native then made his return to engage in a feud with Drew McIntyre.
The feud between Punk and McIntyre was voted best feud of the year in the SI’s 2024 Pro-wrestling awards. The two stars had three bouts against each other which was filled with intense drama and jaw-dropping action.
The Second City Saint ended the feud effectively when he won the trilogy in a gruesome hell-in-a-cell match at Bad Blood 2024. Following his victory, Punk took a brief hiatus from WWE programming and in-ring action.
CM Punk made his return ahead of the Survivor Series 2024 PLE last month, he made his return alongside Paul Heyaman and joined forces with the OG Bloodline (Roman Reigns, The Usos & Sami Zayn) to battle Solo Sikoa’s Bloodline in the men’s WarGames clash.
The OG faction picked up the win in the WarGames clash that produced some of the most viral moments of the year majority of them being the banter and collision between Reigns and Punk.
CM Punk last competed on Monday Night Raw in 2014
The Second City Saint is currently scheduled to face his fierce rival Seth ‘Freakin’ Rollins in the debut episode of the Red brand next month. Monday Night Raw will make the transition to the streaming platform Netflix on January 6 with the first episode scheduled at the Intuit Dome in Inglewood, California.
The two superstars are embroiled in a bitter and intense feud, with both openly displaying their hatred and hostility for each other. The two stars are engaged in a war of words which quickly reaches its boiling point when the two stars clash.
The clash against Rollins in the debut episode next month will be CM Punk’s first match on the Red brand since 2014. He last competed on the Red brand against Billy Gunn in a singles competition where Punk picked up the win.
The match took place on the 01/20/2014 episode of Monday Night Raw which took place at the Nutter Center in Dayton, Ohio, USA.
Following his win against Billy Gunn, The Second City Saint only fought two times in the promotion with one being a dark match on Friday Night SmackDown against The Shield (Dean Ambrose, Roman Reigns & Seth Rollins).
The Second City Saint picked up the win in the Three On One Handicap match. His last match before his initial retirement in 2014 was in Royal Rumble PLE where he competed in the men’s Royal Rumble match.
